With a history dating back to 1397, The George is one of Britain’s oldest taverns. Philip, near Bath.

Butcombe's first Boutique Inn and winners of "Pub of the Year" at the National Pub & Bar Awards 2024 and the first Butcombe Boutique Inn. The George is a historic 14th-century Grade I listed Tudor inn, located in the heart of Norton St. With a history dating back to 1397, The George is one of Britain’s oldest taverns, offering 14 charming ensuite bedrooms full of original features and the perfect base to explore Bath and the Somerset surroundings. On the menu our focus is seasonal, locally sourced produce and exciting takes on pub classics prepared by one of chefs, Aimie Harley who won Salon Culinaire’s Pub Chef of the Year 2024. Enjoy your food with a cracking selection of award-winning Butcombe beer in our beautiful beer garden, with spectacular views.

We’re delighted to introduce Buttercup’s Big Dream (and Ice-Cream!) – a lovely children’s story celebrating food, cooking, teamwork and following your dreams.

Inspired by life in our Butcombe kitchens, it’s a little story with a big heart. ❤️

📚 Books are available for children to enjoy, and you can also take home your very own Buttercup teddy bear!

Whether they’re already little foodies or dreaming of becoming chefs one day, Buttercup is here to inspire the next generation.

🏆 Good luck to Josh! 🏆

We are so proud to share some fantastic news about Josh and his incredible journey at The George Inn!

Josh first joined us in 2023 as a part-time Kitchen Porter before moving into Front of House and quickly working his way up to Team Leader and then Assistant Manager. Alongside this, he has continued to develop his skills and is now working towards his Level 4 Hospitality Management qualification.

His hard work and dedication have certainly not gone unnoticed! Butcombe has recognised Josh’s outstanding achievements by nominating him for the British Institute of Innkeeping’s Hospitality Apprentice of the Year – Front of House award.

Following his interview and judging session, we are absolutely delighted to announce that Josh has been selected as one of the finalists in this category! 🎉

He will be heading to London for the awards ceremony later this month, and we couldn’t be prouder of everything he has achieved.

The Anchor is currently closed as we transform this much-loved village pub into a beautiful Butcombe Boutique Inn, reopening on Tuesday 24th November.

We're giving you a sneak peek into the inspiration behind the redesign. Expect cosy pub spaces rich in character, a bright new restaurant inspired by the countryside and boutique bedrooms designed for the perfect countryside escape.

The Anchor you know and love is still at the heart of it all, with a fresh new look that celebrates its history while creating somewhere special to drink, dine, stay and unwind.

The awards celebrate the very best hospitality and tourism businesses across the region, recognising excellence in customer experience, quality, innovation and outstanding service.

As part of our Butcombe Boutique Inns collection, The George Inn and The Swan are passionate about creating memorable stays, combining beautiful, boutique bedrooms, exceptional food and drink and warm, welcoming hospitality in some of the South West's most characterful locations.
