A quick clarification following our last post.
After reading some of the comments, we realise that parts of our previous post werenโt worded as clearly as we intended.
What we are trying to say is that, in our opinion, 40mph past the Horse & Jockey is simply too fast. With the narrow bridge, restricted visibility, and vehicles regularly turning into and out of the pub, we believe that even 30mph can feel too fast in this particular location.
Our post was never intended to blame anyone involved in last nightโs accident or suggest that dangerous driving by any individual is acceptable. Erratic or careless driving is never acceptable, no matter who you are.
Our only aim is to raise awareness of the dangers on this stretch of Botley Road. Sadly, weโve witnessed several accidents and near misses over the years, and weโre genuinely concerned that, unless something changes, someone could be seriously injured or even lose their life.
This stretch of Botley Road is becoming increasingly dangerous. Visibility is limited for vehicles turning into and out of the Horse & Jockey, and when traffic is travelling at speed, there is very little time for anyone to react.
What makes this even more frustrating is that we were previously informed there were no plans to provide a footpath from the new housing development to the Horse & Jockey because it was felt this would encourage footfall through the ancient woodland.
However, the housing development has brought a substantial increase in traffic along this stretch of road. From our perspective, this seems contradictory. If protecting the woodland was considered important enough to prevent a pedestrian route, then surely the increased traffic and the growing safety risks on this road should also be recognised and addressed.
We are simply asking for this section of road to be reviewed before someone is seriously injured or loses their life. Our aim is to encourage safer driving and to work with the relevant authorities to improve safety for everyone who uses this road.
Weโre simply asking everyone to take extra care, slow down when passing the pub, and be aware that vehicles may be turning in and out at any time.
This isnโt about pointing fingersโitโs about protecting our customers, our neighbours, and everyone who uses this road.
We will once again be contacting the relevant authorities to ask for this stretch of road to be reviewed, and we sincerely hope that, this time, something can be done before a tragedy occurs.
