Hello everyone - it’s Jon typing this!

The picture shows a woman with her son…actually it’s my Mum Vivien with me when I was about 3! The recital I’m playing tomorrow is in thanks and memory to my Mum who helped keep the carillon playing at Newcastle when I began playing it.

When I started, for various reasons, I had no music to play from or any arrangements to hand but I recalled a conversation I had previously with the exceptionally talented carillonneur of Aberdeen, Ronald Leith, who mentioned that he played a lot of classical guitar music.

My Mum had significant classical guitar playing experience and still had her music which she kindly let me borrow and it became the cornerstone of my early recitals at Newcastle.

To commemorate my Mum, listen out for Sor, Aguardo, Carulli and Diabelli tomorrow at the usual time of 1400!

Hello everyone.

Friday's recital is the closest day that Jon has to commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl Catastrophe, one of the world's worst civilian nuclear accidents.

To remember the fallen in this horrific incident that occurred on the 26th April 1986, to honour the people that lived and are living with health complications that followed from this, Jon will be playing a recital of carefully picked music on the carillon from 1400. In addition to the Ukrainian Anthem, Jon will also be including traditional Ukrainian pieces such as the "The Great One" and "The Sun is Low". The recital of thoughtful, contemplative music will begin with a tolling bell with a quiet trill in the background to reflect on the fact that this disaster touched the lives of thousands.

Additionally, Jon will be premiering his latest piece, "Memories of Caesium" which he specifically wrote for this and, as part of the world-wide remembrance of this event, Jon is making this piece of music freely available to anyone who would like a copy.
