Never been mods, suedeheads and anyone with an interest in the underground sub cult scene. We play all our sounds on vinyl and, sh
oot us now it’s not always OVO. We don’t buy into that diktat as we’d rather play the sounds our club goers want to hear and dance to. If you don’t like that policy, don’t come. For everyone else a bit about us and the original Club a'Gogo...
Myself and Paul have a huge passion for promoting the mod culture and musical heritage of 1960s Newcastle. The original Club a’Gogo was hugely important in the 60s and many iconic bands and stars first made their name at the club. The Downbeat Club was the haunt of the Newcastle Beats. The original Club a’ Gogo was located in the sadly demolished Handyside Buildings. Legendary bands played there such as The Animals (who even wrote a song about the club!), The Who, The Rolling Stones, Geno Washington, The Spencer Davis Group, Wilson Pickett and Jimi Hendrix to name but a few. American blues acts such as Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker and Memphis Slim also appeared there. Such was the intimacy of the club that the club goers were able to meet their idols close up, drink and to chat with them. The club was hot, sweaty and packed to the rafters most weekends. Just how we like a club! We hope we can recreate a little piece of this magic at our Club a'Gogo events. We especially want to encourage a new generation of club goer who can discover the mod culture and amazing music for the first time and fall in love with it. So are you with us?? Well we’ll be seeing on the dancefloor! Jools and Paul
