We’re open!

All fresh kegs, sadly no cask until the new ones have settled, many thanks to Turnpike Lichfield for helping with a supply of bottles! But please bear with us as we will almost certainly be low on some of your usual choices. Plenty of wines and spirits and 2 for £11 cocktails, including spritzes, Aperol, Hugo and Limoncello!

Congratulations Lichfield ⛈️

The Met Office has crowned us as the location with the highest 12 hour rainfall totals from the Environment Agency gauges.

We were hit by 60mm of rainfall in 12 hours.

For context, Staffordshire has only had 91.4mm of rain so far this summer 😳

At least the ground will be grateful for the rain ☔

Taking Eddie the dog for a walk a couple of evenings ago, I was delighted to see in Dam Street a traditional style (possibly partly new and partly original) shop awning deployed to protect the paintings and artwork from the sun. This got me thinking about how many of these there would have been in Lichfield in the past and how they were very much part of the high street.

Awnings originated in Ancient Egypt and The Middle East, to protect homes from the sun.
The Romans then also implemented awnings, using retractable systems for the Coliseum!

Awnings became common on shops during the first half of the 19th century, early ones using a frame for support, by the late 19th Century, rope and pulley systems were introduced.

Many of the box housings are still intact above the shops, some are still in use around the City, see if you can find them!

I think they’re lovely, bring back awnings!
