Sad reality..

We rarely use this page to talk about negative experiences, but sometimes we feel it’s important to address behaviour that should never be considered acceptable.

Last week, following a weekend when 26 guests failed to turn up for their bookings, we wanted to highlight why we ask guests to securely enter their card details to confirm a reservation. No money is taken in advance - a charge is only made in accordance with our no-show policy if a booking is missed.

A customer called to make a reservation and became aggressive when this process was explained, saying he didn’t trust us.

Three days later, he arrived at the pub a week before his actual booking date. Our team member, who had handled the original call, politely explained the situation. Despite being fully booked that day, they went out of their way to rearrange things and offer him a table.

What followed was shouting, name-calling and verbal abuse towards a member of our team. All over a booking date that had been correctly recorded and communicated.

And this is the part people don’t always see.

That team member had to put the incident behind them, compose themselves and continue working through a busy service, smiling and looking after other guests as though nothing had happened.

Because that’s what hospitality workers do. But being professional doesn’t mean having to accept abuse.

Our team works incredibly hard to give every guest a warm welcome and a good experience. Mistakes can happen in any business, and genuine concerns will always be listened to. But aggression, insults and verbal abuse are never an acceptable way to deal with a situation.

Following this incident, this individual will no longer be welcome at our pub.

We’re incredibly fortunate that this behaviour is not something we regularly encounter. But even one incident is one too many.

Please remember that behind every bar, every booking and every service is a real person. Treat them with the same respect you’d expect in return.

Thank you to our wonderful team for the professionalism and care they show, even when it’s not easy. ❤️
