A little Mudgee Detour update 👀

Confession: I rushed the first version. When you’re neurospicy you rush bloody everything 😂

So it’s been back to the drawing board. The passport has had a colourful makeover, the puzzles have been cut from 12 down to 6 or 7, and there are more fun facts about Mudgee’s history. Honestly, I’ve had an absolute ball learning it all myself.

The Mudgee History Detour is still in field testing. If you signed up to be a tester, I’ll be in touch.

Want to be first to know when it’s ready? Pop your name on the waitlist at www.thecountrydetourco.com.au 💌

Thank you for your support and your patience. Almost there!

Louisa Lawson was born just outside Gulgong in 1848.

There was no school for her kids, so she petitioned until they built one.

Her son learned to read in that building.

You know him as Henry Lawson.

Then she moved to Sydney and started a newspaper.

Written, set and printed entirely by women.

1888.

The first of its kind in the country.

They ended up calling her the Mother of Suffrage in New South Wales.

I have been walking this town for weeks putting the hunt together, and this is the bit that got me.

All of that started here in this historic town

The familiar bits are where the good questions begin. 👀

You can walk past the same building a hundred times without really seeing it.

The Mudgee History Detour is about slowing down, looking closer and spotting the stories hiding in plain sight.

Old buildings. Tiny details. Curious clues. And those moments that make you go, “Wait… I never knew that.”

A paper-first History Detour through real Mudgee streets and local stories.

Coming together now for field testing. 🤎

Something new is taking shape in Mudgee. 👀

A box of clues.
Stories hidden in familiar streets.
A little detective work for the kids.
And a reason to look at Mudgee differently.

The first Mudgee Detour is getting very close to being ready for its next round of testing, and seeing all the pieces finally come together like this feels pretty bloody exciting.

Made for locals who think they know Mudgee, visitors who want more than the usual tourist stops, and families who want to explore together.

Keep looking up. There’s always another detail. 🔎

Mudgee is hiding in plain sight. 👀

We’re building a paper-first history adventure filled with local stories, clever clues and the little details most people walk straight past.

The Mudgee History Detour is still being field tested, and we’re looking for curious locals and visitors who’d like to be among the first to try it.

This is what building a Country Detour looks like right now.

Coffee going cold. Papers everywhere. Stories being rewritten. Puzzles being tested… and trying very hard not to accidentally give away the answers.

The Mudgee History Detour is in field-test mode, which means every page is being read, solved and questioned before it reaches your hands.

Not glamorous. Very exciting.

We’re getting closer. 👀

A little reminder to look up when you’re wandering through Mudgee.

Rooflines, towers and all those lovely details against the sky. We could happily lose an afternoon to this.

Follow The Country Detour Co as we build our Mudgee History Edition.

Mudgee made what?

Soap, cordial or horse-drawn coaches?

Have a guess before you swipe 👀

Mudgee’s West End once had a factory for each. As people headed for the goldfields, the neighbourhood filled with shops and workshops to keep them supplied.

Little stories like this are why we’re building the Mudgee History Detour.

You can know a town and still get a surprise.

Be honest: which answer did you go for?
