The Grape Alternative Wine Jellies, Gourmet Sauces, Mustards, Horseradish Pastes/Dressing, Vinegar

23/07/2016

Hello to all our fans of The Grape Alternative. We're sorry we are still not producing any stock under the Grape Alternative label. Michael is doing the mustards under Luciano's bit on the Side and are available at the Mudgee Farmers Market & selected retail outlets. I am on a trial for my cancer & about to have my first scans to see how I'm progressing. I'm hopeful of running small workshops in the future for those who would like to learn some of my preserve making tips. Meanwhile consulting is available if you would like one on one lessons. Michael & I have both been invited to judge again at the Hobart Royal Fine Food Awards this year so we are heading south on Wednesday for 3 full days of judging for Michael & 2 for me. Will be lovely catching up with all our fellow judges.

Expressions of interest in a Marmalade Workshop. Citrus season is looming and hearing many stories of failed marmalade I thought I would like to share some of my knowledge. I've judged Marmalade at both Hobart Fine Food Awards & Sydney Fine Food Awards for quite some years & know what a good marmalade should be like....delicious. My method is simple and you get good results every time. Let me know if you could be interested.

This Saturday the Mudgee Farmers Market we will see the return of our popular Killer Chilli & Garlic and Cheeky Ginger and Lemon sauces just in time for the warmer weather. They are both great with seafood, chicken, bbq meats and pork. Blend with yoghurt, cream cheese or mayo to make exquisite dips or use as marinades or dressings. Market times 8 - 12.30, see you there!

Congratulations to Huntington Estate Winery of Mudgee for winning 1 Silver medal & 4 Gold medals & Reserve Champion Sweet Preserve at the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards last week. For fans of our Wine Jellies do not despair these jellies & jams are fantastic (I had a little hand in their creation) They are available for purchase at the Winery. I would also like to assure you although I am a judge at Hobart I had absolutely no contact or influence with the judging of these products.

Judging at the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards is done for 2015. It was great catching up with the many talented judges Michael & I have become friends with and the very hard working committee - equally good friends & in particular Janice who holds it all together. I would also like to say that although I knew quite a few exhibitors that entered into the show I had absolutely no influence on how their products were judged. If they did well it was entirely of their own making - likewise if not. Unfortunately although I was to be part of the judging team of the Savoury Preserves I had to pull out at the last minute. Our visit to the Apple Isle was finished off with specular snow falls this morning, absolutely beautiful.

I didn't think I would make it to the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards this year but here I am.....my palate is in fine form & it's great catching up with fellow judges. Michael has been busy associate judge with delicatessen yesterday & savoury pastries today while I judged beverages yesterday & sweet preserves today.

It is with deep regret that we advise our friends & customers of The Grape Alternative that we have closed the business. I (Kathryn) have been diagnosed with lung cancer which has spread to my bones. I have been advised I have a good chance of a positive outcome with so many new treatments available for cancer, having never smoked gives me much better odds, I will focus on getting better.
We have had an amazing 18 years with the Grape Alternative, won so many awards, at the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards we had the privilege of winning the Richard Langdon Trophy for Best in Show in 2006 & Best Preserve 2005 & 2006, still the only company to have won this award for two years running. The Wine Jellies were unique in 1997 when we first produced them & they still hold their own out in the market place today. They are a true local (Mudgee) product & we are disappointed to be stopping production, if you know anyone who would like a unique small business let them know it's available at a very reasonable price. Michael will be continuing with Luciano's Bit on the Side so if you would like to "like" his page facebook.com/lucianosbitontheside.net.au or check out the website you can keep track of what is happening.
I have some wine jellies available so if you want to stock up go to the website www.thegrapealternative.com.au.
Michael and I would like to thank all our customers and friends for their support over the last 18 years.

Tonight The Grape Alternative's Killer Chilli & Garlic Sauce, sweet soy, dried Thai basil, red wine and a little local olive oil, baked in the oven and served with a squeeze of lemon. Add fried rice, a superb dinner and washed down with a Huntington Chardonnay, tonight is good!
