Thieves have stolen more than 800 barrels of Guinness, roughly 70,000 pints worth around £115,000, by driving off with two HGV trailers from a depot in Runcorn on Monday.

The first lorry was taken at around 7.45pm heading towards the Mersey Gateway bridge, with a second stolen at 9.30pm heading towards Rainhill and Watkinson Way, with the barrels having been destined for pubs.

Police described both drivers as men, one white with a short dark beard wearing a beanie hat, the other believed to have been wearing a cap, with the total value of the stolen goods, including the trailers themselves, estimated at around £205,000.

The white tri-axle curtain-sided trailers carry branding for logistics company GXO and have unique identification numbers, DL736 and DL542, printed in the top left corner of their rear doors.

Det Sgt McClatchy quipped: "It is famously said that 'Guinness is good for you', but that is only the case when it has been bought and paid for," as police continue to appeal for dashcam footage and information.

Guinness drinkers in the affected pubs may find themselves left short over the weekend!

Her Uncle Bill bought us a guitar and played in the Tavern many times. Her other Uncle Louis rented the shop below the Tavern and ran “Smoky Mountain Music Emporium” for a couple of years. Her cousin Richie and his band The Farm Bureau was our house band for a while.
