🏁 The first Southern 500 was in 1950.

🛞 Johnny Mantz was the slowest qualifier in a 75-car field, started 43rd, and bolted truck tires onto a Plymouth while everybody around him chased speed. He won by nine laps over Fireball Roberts.

Seventy-six years later, Darlington is still a tire race, and Sunday it opens the Chase.

♨️ Cook Out Southern 500.
Sunday, 5 p.m. ET on USA and HBO Max, MRN and SiriusXM on the radio.

Showed my dad the throwback paint for Sunday. He scrolled a while and did not say anything. Asked him about it and he said the colors were right and the rest of it was not.

Pressed him a little. He said it looks like a costume of a thing he used to wear to work.

He ran four races in 1988 for a team that folded inside the year.

The paint for Sunday is already out, schemes from the year my dad drove four races for a team that folded inside it. He scrolled through pictures of his own decade for sale and said about four words. My shirt is from that year too, and nobody ever put it on a car.

🏁 Lost But Not Forgotten: Myrtle Beach Speedway 🏖️

Rambi Raceway opened in 1958 on Highway 501 outside Myrtle Beach, a half-mile of dirt that got paved in 1974 and became Myrtle Beach Speedway. Cup ran there from 1958 through 1965. Every generation of Petty took a green flag on that track, and so did three generations of Earnhardt.

The land was sold to a developer in 2020, the last flag fell that August, and by December 2021 most of the place was scraped off. Sixty-two years of racing, beaten by a survey stake.

The first photo shown is the current street view of the track's former address. Sad. 😔
