If you’re unfamiliar with 🦡 The Legend of Lulsley Badger Rolling 🦡 WELL, here’s the history…
Few villages can boast a tradition as ancient and peculiar as Badger Rolling said to have originated in Lulsley, Worcestershire in the year 1263.
According to ‘The Chronicle of Brother Osbert of Martley Abbey’, the sport began quite by accident. During a particularly wet Autumnal Eve, the villa**rs gathered at what was then called Ye Fox & Houndes Alehouse, where the ale and mead had been flowing with gusto 🍺
A local miller named Edric the Round, a man of girth and questionable balance, was dared to chase a badger that had stolen the innkeeper’s Loaded Fries (available 5:30-8pm from the excellent BAo Daz Street Food)
In the ensuing chaos, Edric slipped on the muddy green, rolled downhill, and accidentally overtook the badger. Despite the loss of the Loaded Fries, the onlookers were delighted by both the spectacle and Edric’s survival declaring it “a triumph of man o’er beast and gravity alike.”
Thus was born the sport of Badger Rolling 🦡
By the late 13th century, the villa**rs of Lulsley had codified the event into an annual contest held every Bonfire Eve 🔥 . Competitors would stand atop ‘Badger Hill’ (now more commonly known as the ‘Bottom B**r Garden’…), clutching flagons of ale.
At the cry of “Roll ye Badger!”, b**r barrels beautifully festooned in the colours of the mighty Badger would be released in a bid to recreate the magic of that wondrous night in 1263. The Male and Female that could roll their barrel the farthest would be crowned the ‘King & Queen of Badger’ 👑
Though no longer practised competitively (officially, at least), whispers persist that between 5:30-8pm each Bonfire Eve (or nearest Saturday that doesn’t compete with other popular Bonfires…) the faint mystical wail of Edric the Round tumbling down Badger Hill can be faintly heard over the sound of the roaring fire and the coming and going of hatchbacks and 4x4s from the back car park…
SO JOIN US Saturday 31st October and join the Ancient Order of Lulsley Badger Rollers!!!
Grab your BAo Daz Street Food, Grab your flagon of ale and GO FORTH AND ROLL with all your might in a bid to be crowned our KING or QUEEN of BADGER
