Sometimes it’s the little things that mean the most ❤️

This week, our 19-year-old chef Charlie received something very special in the post.

A handwritten letter all the way from Bristol, sent by a guest who enjoyed one of Charlie’s homemade steak pies during a recent visit to The White Gate.

In a world of online reviews and social media comments, taking the time to put pen to paper and send a letter over 200 miles to encourage a young chef is something truly special.

Charlie has worked incredibly hard developing his skills under the guidance of our Head Chef Michael, and moments like this make all the effort worthwhile.

The letter praised not only “the best steak pie ever” but also Charlie’s hard work and positive attitude, finishing with wishes for his future and a reminder to “keep smiling.”

We’re incredibly proud of Charlie and grateful to Anne for their kindness. It’s a wonderful reminder of how much a few thoughtful words can mean.

Hot weather. Chilled red …….hear us out!🍷

Hot Bank Holiday weather usually means white wine or rosé… but what if we told you to try a chilled red instead?

A lightly chilled red can completely change how a wine drinks in warmer weather — fresher, brighter and far more refreshing than many people expect.

We recommend starting with our Valdemoreda Tempranillo. It’s fruit-forward, approachable and slightly chilled the juicy berry notes really come alive. Perfect for anyone who doesn’t naturally reach for white or rosé but wants something cooler for the sunshine.

For something to enjoy alongside food from our new terrace menu, our Podere Montepulciano is another one worth trying chilled. With bright acidity and softer tannins, cooling it slightly lifts the fruit character and works beautifully with dishes like our NEW Lamb, Feta & Mint Burger or Veggie Supreme Stone Baked Pizza.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, with this year’s theme being Action, we’ve been reflecting on the importance of supporting people through life’s challenges - whether that’s exams, work pressures or struggles people may be facing quietly. 💚

As you may know, our very own Ashley Spencer will be taking on the incredible Mind Over Miles challenge later this year - running, cycling, and kayaking 575 miles across the UK in 7 days.

Each mile represents one of the 575 lives lost to su***de in Yorkshire in a single year, helping raise awareness, encourage conversation, and remind people they are never alone.

At The White Gate, we truly believe that checking in, offering support, and creating space for conversation can make a real difference.

At The White Gate, this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week 11th-17th May 2026 theme “Action” really resonates with us.

Sometimes action is the big things, but often it’s the small everyday support that matters most. As a responsible employer, we believe in creating a workplace where our team feel supported both inside and outside of work.

Right now, three of our team members are balancing work alongside their GCSE exams a huge commitment at an important stage in their lives. We’re proud to support them by encouraging balance, understanding the pressures they face, and giving them the space and flexibility they need to succeed.

Looking after mental wellbeing means recognising when people need support, encouragement or simply someone in their corner. Investing in young people, their confidence, and their future is action worth taking.
