Why we shop independent. And why we always will. ❤️
As an independent business ourselves, supporting other independents has always been important to us.
But it's about so much more than simply shopping local.
It's about the relationships you build, the people who get to know your business and the genuine care that goes into what they do.
Take our local chocolate shop Fusion Chocolate UK
One very hot day in July, I collected chocolates for that evening's supper club, did the school run and headed back to work. By the time I arrived, the chocolates had completely melted.
Paula drove over an hour's round trip to bring us replacements so that everything was perfect for our guests that evening.
She didn't have to do that. But she cared.
Or our local greengrocer Moor Fruit & Veg
When we're putting together something special and the edible flowers we'd normally use aren't available, she doesn't just say, "Sorry, we haven't got any."
They know our business, understand what we're trying to create and will suggest beautiful alternatives that work just as well, sometimes even better.
And our local Three Little Birds Bakery, who understands that hospitality doesn't always come with weeks of notice. Whether it's freshly baked cupcakes or an afternoon tea order with a tight turnaround, they'll always do their best to make it happen.
These aren't just suppliers to us.
They're people who know our business, understand the standards we want to deliver and genuinely care about helping us get things right.
And I think that's something really special.
Of course, we could order more things online. We could probably find cheaper alternatives for some of them too.
But what you can't always buy is that level of care, knowledge, flexibility and personal service.
When you shop independent, you're not just buying a product. You're building a relationship with someone who genuinely cares about what they do.
And as a business owner, I know just how much that matters.
I also love knowing that the money we spend is going back into other small businesses, supporting local families and helping our community thrive.
Our business is better because of the brilliant independent businesses we work with. And I hope, in our own way, we make a difference to theirs too.
That's why we choose to shop independent. Not just because it's local, but because it's personal.
So here's a little appreciation post for all the independent businesses who go that extra mile, often without anyone knowing.
I'd love to hear about the independent businesses you couldn't do without. Give them a shout-out in the comments. ❤️
