On the first Tuesday of every month, Hans, one of Bath’s best-known dogs, hosts a free acoustic songwriters’ circle at The Grapes with the help of his humans.

Bring a new song, a half-finished one or an old favourite, play it to a friendly room of fellow writers and hear what they make of it, with a good chance of a jam once everyone has warmed up. Whether you’ve been writing for decades or are just finding your voice, you’ll fit right in!

It runs from 8pm with sign-up on the night, so it’s worth arriving a little early, and dogs are very welcome, as Hans would be the first to point out...

Hello November!

Sundays aren't slow at The Grapes, even after a smashing Halloween party!

Join us from 4pm to enjoy music from Poor Old Dogs, a riotous folk band from Bristol, bringing b**r-soaked mayhem and foot-stomping energy to the timeless traditions of UK and Irish folk music.

They deliver raucous tunes, wild stories, and the kind of chaos that pairs perfectly with a pint (or three), performing both traditional music and their own self-penned songs.

Music from 4pm, free entry and if you're really lucky, Pete will give you a spin!

Tonight is Samhain.

For the Celts, this was the hinge of the year. The harvest was in, the nights were drawing long, and the boundary between the living and the dead was thought to be at its thinnest. Bonfires burned on the hills, the departed were honoured at the table, and strangers at the door were never turned away, just in case...

From 9pm, the bar will celebrate with DJs playing until late and a fancy dress competition, with a prize for the best dressed. Think old folklore over fancy dress aisle: horned headdresses, hooded figures, painted faces, berries and bone, something half remembered from a story your grandmother told.

Free entry. No tickets. Just turn up.

One of our favourite customers is here to welcome you to the weekend!

From 9pm tonight, Dusk Art Rhythm Quartet play thier own version of Hot Buttered Soul, Gnarly New Orleans R&B, and Finger Lickin’ Louisiana Blues right here in the bar. Bring your dancing shoes!

On Saturday night from 9pm, as the veil between our world and the next thins, The Grapes will be celebrating Samhain!

Live DJs will be on the decks all night, and there’s a fancy dress competition with a prize for the best dressed. Think less shop-bought witch, more wandering folk spirit: masks, antlers, cloaks, crowns of autumn leaves, or whatever the season stirs in you.

Both events are free to attend, so make sure your weekend plans include us!

Fancy dress has never needed an excuse at The Grapes.

Over the years, the bar has seen a red ranger on the doorstep, a squad of ghost hunters propping up the counter, two Victorian wanderers sharing a brew by the door, and more than one Austin enthusiast waiting patiently for a pint. Some came for a party. Some just came as they were that day. Nobody blinked.

A pub that has been pouring for over 230 years has seen most things walk through its doors, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

So when the last night of October comes round, it feels right to mark it properly. Thinning of the Veil is our Samhain party, after the old Celtic festival that closed the harvest and turned the year towards the dark. A night when the line between this world and the next was said to wear thin, and doors were left open for whoever, or whatever, wandered in.

Live DJs from 9pm till late, candlelight, good company and a prize for the best dressed. Shop-bought witch hats are welcome, though masks, antlers, cloaks and crowns of autumn leaves feel more in keeping with the night.

Did you know The Grapes has a link to a Bath murder from 1626?

Long before it was The Grapes, 14 Westgate Street was a townhouse, and its first recorded tenant was Richard Gay: four times mayor of Bath, member of Parliament and, by virtue of the mayoralty, the city’s coroner.

In February 1626, Gay had been sitting in the House of Commons for less than a fortnight when he stood up and asked to go home. A prominent Bath citizen had murdered his wife and then taken his own life, and as coroner the matter fell to him.

The House let him leave, then began asking whether a sitting mayor should have been elected at all. Parliament was dissolved before anyone reached an answer.

Four centuries on, the house he hurried home to still keeps late hours. This Halloween we’re marking it properly, with a night of music, candlelight and good company.

We will have a DJ on the decks all night, and there’s a fancy dress competition with a prize for the best dressed. Think less shop-bought witch, more wandering folk spirit: masks, antlers, cloaks, crowns of autumn leaves, or whatever the season stirs in you.

Tonight, Salt Beef Reuben will be kicking off the weekend from 9pm!

Salt Beef Reuben has cultivated their sound at The Grapes' weekly Wednesday jazz night. Maniacal keyboard lines, booming bass and a flurry of furious guitar licks combine to create an experience that has been described as 'pretty darn spicy'.

It's jazz... but louder, angrier and back with a vengeance. It's Friday night and Salt Beef Reuben invites you to celebrate with a showcase of raw talent.
