Dating from 1455 The King's Head is a hidden gem in the heart of the old market town of Aylesbury. Beautiful beams and wooden floors bedeck this old-world style inn and there is a warm welcome from the friendly staff whether you are drinking, dining or coming in for coffee. The bar is stocked with an excellent selection of the Chiltern Brewery’s fine draught ales and bottled beers, craft lagers and ciders along with a select choice of wines. Choose your drink and retire to one of the comfy sofas or old wooden benches and when the sun is shining it is a must to sit out in the ancient cobbled courtyard surrounded on all sides by old stables, the Great Hall and the beautiful arch under the inn where coaches used to enter. The scent of hops is likely to give you a healthy appetite so be sure to ask for our Bill of Fare which offers delicious platters. The emphasis is on quality, simplicity and taste using the finest, wherever possible, locally sourced ingredients. Wonderful fresh bread baked locally using our real ales and exquisite cheese made on a dairy farm using our Beechwood Bitter, are a couple of the wholesome ingredients with true provenance used by our chef. Try our hearty and traditional ploughman’s lunch or enjoy an excellent meal in the Hop Pocket.

A busy day today!

We’re open from 10am for smooth, calm coffee in the Great Hall.

At 10:30 we’ve our King’s Head Tour (spaces are booked I’m afraid).

1pm and 3pm we’ve talks being given in our Dining Room as part of Heritage Open Days, tickets via Aylesbury Town Council

Then it’s preparing for Sunday and a large private function on Monday.

🍺🍺New B**r Delivery‼️🍺🍺

We’ve had an exciting delivery this morning from Chiltern Brewery ! Their latest Small Batch Brew is now in our cellars!!

Along with the ever-excellent Chiltern Pale Ale, Beechwood Bitter and Chiltern L***r, we took delivery of Chiltern Dunkel.

Brewed with Munich, L***r, Chocolate, Carafa and Wheat malts, Dunkel is a dark, inviting, smooth malt-led b**r reminiscent of toasted malt and bread crust.

Mittelfruh and Saaz hops add balance making it a rich and wonderfully drinkable.

I know this is another behind the scenes post, but I find them interesting because it’s about how buildings close to 600 years old are maintained for us and future generations.

The front wall to the right of our gatehouse entrance takes a bit of a battering when the neighbour’s bins are collected each week. The lime render is slowly scraped away and if not caught in time, can wear down to the bricks beneath. If that happens it’s only a hop, skip and jump before water gets in and causes all sorts of mischief!

In the photos you can see the work ready to begin with the lime plaster nearly ready for applying. In the second photo all the areas of damage have been filled.

Drying out is controlled by the sheet. If lime dries too fast it can crack, so the sheet helps keep moisture in so the curing/drying takes a little longer. But we get a better result.

Part 2 is that once ready and hardened, a bespoke rail will go up on the wall to take the bashes and bangs from the bins!

It shouldn’t be too much longer until the wall is ready for the rail of Part 2!

We’re very excited to let you know we have only one cask of Chiltern Brewery Lord Lieutenant’s Porter on the bar!

This is a fabulous porter - 6%, ruby coloured, creamy, chocolatey and rich.

It’s a cliche, but a very true one in this case — when this goes, that’ll be it for a few years I expect. It’ll be out in bottle shortly as a one-off brew, but as far as draught goes, it’s almost as rare as Halley’s Comet!!☄️

We’ve some more special b**rs coming from Chiltern Brewery before long, so keep your eyes open…

Our autumn menus are now being served in the Farmers’ Bar and Great Hall.

We're really happy to see some seasonal favourites returning, alongside warming dishes and new additions, all cooked from scratch by our kitchen team using fresh and local ingredients.

Our Fixed Price Menu is refreshed too — 2 courses for £19 or 3 courses for £25, available Wednesday to Saturday at lunch and dinner.

And Sunday roasts are very much back in full swing!

Our tours are a relaxed, informal look at the history of the building, the people who have passed through it and the role The King’s Head continues to play today.

Good morning!
