Dating from 1455 The King's Head is a hidden gem in the heart of the old market town of Aylesbury. Beautiful beams and wooden floors bedeck this old-world style inn and there is a warm welcome from the friendly staff whether you are drinking, dining or coming in for coffee. The bar is stocked with an excellent selection of the Chiltern Brewery’s fine draught ales and bottled beers, craft lagers an

d ciders along with a select choice of wines. Choose your drink and retire to one of the comfy sofas or old wooden benches and when the sun is shining it is a must to sit out in the ancient cobbled courtyard surrounded on all sides by old stables, the Great Hall and the beautiful arch under the inn where coaches used to enter. The scent of hops is likely to give you a healthy appetite so be sure to ask for our Bill of Fare which offers delicious platters. The emphasis is on quality, simplicity and taste using the finest, wherever possible, locally sourced ingredients. Wonderful fresh bread baked locally using our real ales and exquisite cheese made on a dairy farm using our Beechwood Bitter, are a couple of the wholesome ingredients with true provenance used by our chef. Try our hearty and traditional ploughman’s lunch or enjoy an excellent meal in the Hop Pocket.

Summer, tucked away just up here through our gates.

Our courtyard is a tranquil sun trap. Large, airy and planted with plenty of colour, it’s an award-winning place to while away an hour or two.

It’s where you’ll want to enjoy great beers, wines and lovely seasonal dishes cooked by our chefs from local ingredients.

And now we’re open from 10am in the Great Hall for coffee and pastry.

Here’s our beer board showing what we have on tap now.

We’ve the last cask of Chiltern Brewery Chalk Stream which has proved really popular.

We’ve also got a cask of London Lush 3.4%, from London Brewing Co.

Plus exciting craft beers including a great selection of ‘Low to No’ alcohol drinks — beers, lager, wines and spirits!

Summer is here and tucked away in our Courtyard - make us your destination when you head out this weekend.

Delivery day has a sound that can be felt!

Once drayman Scott has brought the casks and kegs over the cobbles to the top of the cellar doors, we lower them down to the cellar depths.

As the casks are prepared for lowering down the skids to the cellar and then rolled by Amber into the ale cellar there’s a very deep rumble that shakes the building slightly as they roll.

It’s a reassuring sound, one that the walls here have echoed for over five centuries. We’re doing it the same way today, as it would have been done when the King’s Head was newly-built pre-1455!

The only difference would be that the casks that were wooden are now steel. And electricity. We have electricity so we can see where we’re rolling the casks!! Goodness knows how they lit their way with little lamps back then.

In the pictures the large casks hold 150 pints each. Today’s delivery from was 750 pints of real ale.

The smaller containers are kegs of Chiltern Brewery’s Lager and Session IPA. They hold about 50 pints so another 200 pints.

Nearly 1000 pints dropped off today!

We opened the Great Hall at 10am for coffee and a place to enjoy a moment of calm, or meet a friend.

The most popular dish was this — Grilled Mushroom on Sourdough Toast. Great compliments on it too!
