🎆Remember, remember, the 5th of November.

🔥To mark bonfire night tomorrow, here’s a poster from the Davison Printers collection showing the tradition alive with a Guy Fawkes dance in Ashington, 1948. NRO 08073/111

When the paperwork matches the wardrobe...

We were delighted to uncover papers relating to servants' livery within the Hughes collection at our Berwick office - especially because the actual livery has survived too!

Through our estates cataloguing project, we're piecing together the history of these items. Once catalogued, they will be available to view in our Study Centres - watch this space.

The estates cataloguing project is funded by a grant awarded by Northumberland Archives Charitable Trust via support provided by the Sir James Knott Trust.

Happy Halloween! 🎃👻🏰

Did you know Northumberland has one of the most haunted castles in the country?

According to their site, Chillingham Castle boasts some of the highest levels of paranormal activity in the country, with a large collection of spectres and apparitions spotted by visitors over the years.

There is a ghostly lady who lives in the pantry, a spectral Blue Boy who emerges from the wall, and in the courtyard (shown here in a photo from our collection), eerie movements can be seen hiding in the shadows...

Have you seen any ghosts at Chillingham Castle?

While a graveyard may give an eerie Halloween chill this time of year, it’s also a place to admire the craftsmanship that went into creating these stone works of art.

Here’s two lovely memorials commemorating those who called the North East home; the monument of Grace Darling in Bamburgh, and a Tree of Life altar tomb at Hexham Abbey, attributed to King Aelfwald of Northumbria.

Are you feeling the Halloween spirit yet? 💀

We've yet to accession any vampires or ghosts, but our archaeological collections still fit the bill. This skull was excavated in Tarset, Northumberland and dates to the Bronze Age. Sadly we do not know who this person was, or what else was found with them, but the glass slide itself is from 1900 and would have been used in turn of the century powerpoints!

The slide is by J P Gibson of Hexham, Northumberland and is part of the collection of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne (SANT)
