How does w**e survive for almost 100 years?

Fortification, ageing, oxygen, corks and a w**emaking process designed to create something that can outlive generations.

The crazy part is that bottles like this weren’t created to become museum pieces.

They were created to be drunk.

So that’s exactly what we did.

Imagine keeping a bottle for almost 100 years…

Then two idiots come along and pull the cork. 😂🍷

Once it’s open, there’s no going back.

So how long do you actually have to drink a w**e this old before it starts falling apart?

Carlos says weeks.

Angus is thinking… hours.

Why do we store w**e horizontally? 🍾

It’s not about slowly introducing oxygen into the bottle. The real reason is far simpler, and far more important if you want your w**e to survive for 30 years.

Same grape. Same vintage. Four very different outcomes. 🍷

We opened four Australian Cabernet Sauvignons from 1996 to discover what 30 years does to a bottle of w**e.

Which regions stood the test of time, which w**es had faded, and what went wrong along the way?

Can Australian Cabernet Sauvignon still deliver after 30 years? 🍷

We put four bottles from the brilliant 1996 vintage side by side to see which had survived, which had evolved and which had simply run out of time.

A huge thank you to for generously providing the w**es.

Would you pay $450 to drink something made in 1927?

Because once you start thinking about what has happened in the world since this w**e was made, the price suddenly feels a little different.

This isn’t just an old bottle. It’s drinkable history.

What w**e would you pair with a Scotch egg? 🥚🍷

Rich sausage, a soft-centred egg and plenty of savoury flavour make this much more difficult than it looks.

We put one of Britain’s greatest pub snacks to the test at Ye Olde W**e Shades in London.

What do you pair with a w**e that’s nearly 100 years old?

Apparently this question is much harder than it sounds 😂

A 1927 bottle, two very different opinions and one tasting we’re probably never going to replicate.

We opened a bottle from 1927.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Nearly 100 years old, still sealed, and carrying almost a century of history inside it.

But what does something this old actually taste like? And more importantly, how much of what’s in the bottle is really from 1927?

We put on our Sherlock Holmes hats, opened it and found out. 🍷
