AUSSIE OPEN...from the head!

Congratulations to Trish and Tony, who have both progressed through to the Quarter Finals of their respective singles disciplines after some fantastic bowls yesterday. A special mention also goes to Kaytlyn, who narrowly missed out on joining them in the finals stages after a strong performance throughout the event.

Today the focus shifts back to the pairs competitions, with Tony and Mike beginning their Men's Over 60's Pairs sectional campaign at Paradise Point. Meanwhile, Trish and Kaytlyn will be in action at Helensvale in the Multi Disability Open Pairs sectionals.

The games keep coming, the kilometres keep adding up, and somehow everyone is still smiling!

Good luck to all our TFNQ players today 🤩

AUSSIE OPEN .....from the head!

The Singles campaigns for both Mike and Leonie have come to an end, but what an achievement they have both chalked up during this year's Australian Open.

Mike got his knockout campaign off to the perfect start with a 21-18 win over Matthew Kelly before earning himself a crack at former Commonwealth Games representative Wayne Turley. Mike more than held his own for most of the match, but when the rain arrived, so did some very challenging conditions and finally finished on 8-21

Leonie faced former Queensland and Australian representative Chloe Stewart. Going into the game, the goal was simple... score a point. Once that was achieved, the target moved to five points, then double figures. By the end of the match, Leonie had finished with 17 shots and a memory that will last a lifetime against one of the sport's accomplished players.

A special thanks to our roving photographer, Andrea, who was on hand to capture some great footage of the games.

Tomorrow the spotlight turns to Trish and Tony, who take to the greens in the Physical Disability Open Singles and Deaf and Hearing Impaired Open Singles. We'll be there cheering them on and flying the FNQ flag.

Good luck, Trish and Tony. We're all behind you!

AUSSIE OPEN .....from the head!

Yesterday the Ladies 4's got underway at Club Helensvale. The opening game looked destined to be a win after the team led for most of the match. Unfortunately, they found themselves stuck on 11 shots while their opponents mounted a late charge and pipped them at the post.

Not to be discouraged, the ladies bounced back in Game 2, turning the tables and putting a well-deserved win on the board.

The final match of the day saw a change of scenery, moving from the undercover synthetic rinks onto the grass green. Waiting for them was a highly focused Malaysian side that proved too strong on the day and went on to finish top of the section.

Today the Singles knockout rounds get underway, with both Mike and Leonie in action. Mike faces Matthew Kelly at Nerang, whilst Leonie takes on Chloe Stewart at Beenleigh. With rain threatening once again, both will be hoping for clear skies and the chance to play their best bowls.

AND back at home....good luck to all MCBC Pennant teams today. Play well team!!!!

AUSSIE OPEN....from the head!

The Ladies Singles was played in some absolutely horrid conditions on Wednesday, with rain, wind and cold temperatures testing everyone's resolve. Andrea battled hard throughout the day, picking up one win and narrowly missing out in her other two matches.

Yesterday, Terry was right in the hunt all day, winning two of her three games and coming heartbreakingly close to progressing, ultimately missing out by the slimmest of margins.

As some of you may have already heard, Leonie was drawn to play none other than World No. 1 Dawn Hayman. Unfortunately, Dawn was unwell and had to withdraw from the event before play commenced. We wish Dawn a speedy recovery as she prepares for the Commonwealth Games and look forward to seeing her back on the green soon.

Meanwhile, Leonie made the most of the opportunity presented, recording three wins from three games to progress through her section and into the knockout rounds.

The Men's Fours team of Mike, Eddie, Graham and Tony faced some very strong opposition and produced some outstanding bowls along the way. While the results didn't quite fall their way overall, they finished on a high note with a convincing win in their final game.

Today the spotlight turns to the Ladies Fours, with Terry, Andrea, Trish and Leonie heading to Helensvale to begin their sectional play, and with two of the three games on the covered synthetic, it might just feel a little more like home!!

Good luck ladies!

AUSSIE OPEN .... from the head!

The Round of 32 in the Mixed Pairs saw a fantastic effort from Leonie and Mike, who took their match right down to the wire.

Heading into the final end, the scores were all square and, with just two bowls left to be played, it was anyone's game. Unfortunately, Caseylee and Brian managed to hang on and claim victory by one shot 13-12.

Despite the result, there were plenty of smiles from Team Sims, who exceeded all expectations by making it through to the Round of 32. It's been a terrific run and one to be extremely proud of.

The focus now shifts to the next events, with Andrea kicking off her Ladies Singles campaign today.

Tomorrow sees Terry and Leonie take to the greens for their Singles events, while Mike, Eddie, Graham and Tony begin their Men's Fours campaign.

The Mixed Pairs may be over, but the Aussie Open adventure is far from finished.

AUSSIE OPEN....from the head!

Day 3 - What a day it was!

Dark clouds were looming from early morning and looked ready to unleash at any moment. Thankfully, apart from a few light showers, the weather mostly behaved itself... at least during the day.

Mike and Tony kicked off their Men's Singles campaigns, with Mike putting together a strong performance to qualify in his section with two wins and a draw. Tony faced some tough opposition and finished a very respectable second in his section.

Then it was straight to Broadbeach with their better halves for the next round of the Mixed Pairs.

The heavens had spent all day threatening action and finally found their voice during the Mixed Pairs, having spectators running for cover and competitors digging out their raincoats.

Oddly enough, the interruption seemed to work in Leonie and Mike's favour, who built on their lead to record a convincing 16-6 victory and secure their place in the next round.

For Terry and Tony, the run came to an end, going down 4-22 against a quality opposition pair.

Today is a much-needed rest day. No scorecards, no thermals, no rushing between venues... just a chance to recharge the batteries before the next round.

𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄

Good news from the Gold Coast! Both Far North teams survived another chilly night and are marching on.

✅ Terry & Tony had a great win 18-13
✅ Leonie & Mike scraped home in a heart-stopper 12-11

The Mixed Pairs campaign continues tonight at Broadbeach as both teams look to the next round....wins for both would see Team McAlary V Team Sims!!!!

A big thank you to our roving reporter Andrea, who kept everyone back home updated with scores and results throughout the evening.

And there's no rest for the wicked...

The Men's Singles kicks off today, with Mike and Tony ready to roll. That's three games of singles during the day, followed by another Mixed Pairs knockout match tonight.

At this rate, the biggest challenge might not be the opposition... it might be staying awake long enough to finish the last end! 😴🥶

Stay tuned.......

AUSSIE OPEN.... from the head!

The Aussie Open kicked off yesterday, and seven brave souls from the Far North swapped sunshine for beanies and headed south to.... have a go!

Yesterday Terry, Tony, Leonie, Mike, Andrea and Eddie got things underway in the Mixed Pairs, which is making its Australian Open debut this year.

After a long day on the greens, Terry & Tony and Leonie & Mike successfully progressed through their sections and into the knockout rounds. Andrea & Eddie were right in the mix all day and were unlucky to just miss out.

Tonight it's knockout under lights 🥶 ... the good news is both Far North teams are playing at Helensvale and will be cheering each other on.

Good luck tonight!!!
