30 YEARS AGO IN POMONA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, WAS THE BIRTH OF TOTAL CHAOS. CREATED OUT OF THE DESPERATE NEED TO SAVE A DYING GENRE OF PUNK ROCK, DURING A TIME THAT THE MARKET WAS SATURATED WITH A MORE COMMERCIAL NEW STYLE. IT WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO EXPRESS THEIR SOCIAL AND POLITICAL VIEWS. THE IDEA OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY WAS A SIGNIFICANT THING, FROM ORGANIZING PEACE PUNK PICNICS, TO PROTESTING AGAINST THE GULF WAR, THEIR MUSIC HAD MEANING AND STOOD FOR SOMETHING. OVER THE YEARS, THE BAND HAS SEEN MANY THINGS COME AND GO, BUT THEY HAVE STUCK TO THEIR ORIGINAL IDEALS.
San Antonio-based band Fea embody one of the most vital tenets of punk: total and unapologetic freedom, fearlessly expressed with both fury and joy. Produced by Chicana punk legend Alice Bag, their sophomore album No Novelties finds Fea following their instincts into entirely unexpected directions (e.g., covering an early-’90s pop anthem from Mexican superstar Gloria Trevi, trash-talking en Français on a yé-yé-inspired track called “Merde”). But even in its most playful moments, No Novelties channels a classic-punk ferocity, endlessly backing Fea’s sticky melodies with breakneck rhythms, blistering guitar riffs, and boldly nuanced vocal work.
Noogy is a DIY punk, hardcore, and ska-core band based out of Denton, Texas. Formed in January 2016, the group is known for its energetic sound that blends 80s hardcore with East Bay-style ska-punk.
