MLA is grateful to Senators Collins and King for their longstanding leadership in defending Maine’s thousands of lobstermen and families who depend on the lobster industry. MLA joins them in urging Senators Cruz and Cantwell to advance the Northeast Lobsterman Protection Act of 2026 through the Senate Commerce Committee.

Why be an MLA member? 🦞

For some, it’s about staying informed. For others, it’s about having a voice in the decisions that affect their livelihoods. And for many, it’s about protecting the future of Maine’s lobster fishery.

We asked some of our members why MLA membership matters to them. Their answers may sound familiar.

What does it mean to be a member of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association (MLA), the state’s oldest fishermen’s advocacy group?“It means I’m informed on anything I need to know — regulations, gauge increase plan, anything,” said Erick Harjula, a South Thomaston lobsterman. Harjula is surp...

🦞 Billion Egg Challenge Leaderboard Week 11 🦞

All three teams are officially over 20,000 notches!

The competition is still going strong as we head into the final stretch of the Billion Egg Challenge. Southern Maine is holding onto the lead, Downeast is keeping the pressure on, and Midcoast has officially crossed the 20K mark!

Together, Maine lobstermen have now protected 722,020,000 lobster eggs — 72.2% of the way to ONE BILLION!

Keep those notches comin’ and keep reporting them — there’s still time to shake up this leaderboard.

Meet MLA Jr. Harvester Poppy Holden!

At 8 years old, Poppy has her student lobster license, 10 traps and a 16-foot Carolina skiff named Sea Sisters — plus a hardworking crew made up of her younger sisters and dad.

She loves banding lobsters, checking her traps to see what turns up, and her signature purple and teal gear. The bait? Not so much. “Stinky old fish!”

Poppy knows lobstering is hard work, but she’s hooked: “I get tired at nighttime. But I want to keep on doing it.”

Meet Poppy and read more about this next-generation lobsterman in our latest Jr. Harvester feature: https://buff.ly/w8rAMfj

Don’t forget to send in your latest numbers—even if you’ve got a few weeks’ worth piled up. (We know some of you do.)

Notch ’em. Count ’em. Report ’em. Let’s see how close we can get to ONE BILLION eggs protected!

Lobster eggs are pretty cool when you realize how many changes are happening in such a small home!

These lobster embryos, while held on to the underside of the female in clutches up to 100,000 eggs, go through different stages before hatching.

While the embryos develop, the eggs change color as the embryo develops eyes and loses its yolk. We can use these different colors to assess the stages of egg development and get a better idea of when the eggs will release larval lobsters!

Membership Matters.

Standing up for Maine lobstermen has been at the heart of the MLA since the beginning.

In 1957, the Maine Lobstermen’s Association took on one of its earliest fights, standing with lobstermen for a fair price for their catch—even when it meant facing the federal government in court.
