On Sunday, April 19th, Hickory Creek Winery will be closed as we gather to honor and celebrate the life of Mark.

Mark wasn’t just part of the winery—he was part of the heartbeat of this place. A friend, a steady presence, and someone who made it better for all of us.

Thank you for your understanding as we take this time together.

Heartbroken. Devastated. HCW will not be the same without Mark.

My brother, my lifelong best friend, and a longtime Hickory Creek employee was taken from us Wednesday evening. While walking near his home in Kalamazoo, he was hit by a car traveling at a dangerously high rate of speed. The driver appeared to be racing another vehicle. It was a hit and run accident that is still under investigation.

I thought about closing for the weekend. After careful consideration and discussion with our team, we have decided to remain open. Our staff is reeling. But we thought Mark would want us to be together and serve our community and laugh and share stories and cry and hug and somehow get through this.

I will share information about services in the next few days.

Happy Birthday to the steady hand behind the bar, our Tasting Room Manager, Jeffrey.

If you’ve ever had a perfect pour, a calm answer to a complicated wine question, or a gentle redirect away from ranch dressing… you’ve met Jeffrey.

He doesn’t ask for attention.
He doesn’t make a big deal about anything.
He just shows up — every single day — and makes Hickory Creek better.

When he’s not guiding you through a flight, he’s probably thinking about his short game.

Sixteen harvests. Tens of thousands of guests. Countless bottles. One absolute legend.

If you’re in the tasting room this weekend, raise a glass and wish him a happy birthday.

Some places change your life the first time you visit.

Thinking back to my first visit to HCW in January 2017. The winery was on the market and I wanted to check it out as a regular guest before a more formal real estate walk-through a few weeks later.

It was a sunny Sunday like today. Crisp and snow blanketed. The sun and the blue sky as a backdrop for the iconic horse livery barn. The vibe was quiet with a handful of other people in the tasting room.

It was my first impression of a place that would become my home and my favorite place on earth. I fell in love that day with the rustic beauty of Hickory Creek Winery.

You should stop out and see for yourself the special type of quiet magic that exists only in the winter in Michigan Wine Country.

We are open 7 days a week, year-round.

Driveway is plowed. Sidewalk shoveled and salted. Pizza oven is fired up. Wine is ready to pour.

I think you'll get it.

Repping the Creek (and the and ) at Unified 2026. It was an action packed week of wine seminars, conversations and not-Arctic weather out here in Sacramento.

My takeaway -

A lot of people are worried about our industry. There's a lot of talk about Millennials and Gen Z drinking less wine than generations before them. We are seeing cocktails and cannabis and spirits and RTDs taking market segment. It's daunting...
..but...

Wine has been a part of culture and society for 8,000+ years. We are rooted in agriculture and small family business. Our product is handmade by passionate people who really give a s--- about what we do. The wines we craft are low intervention and natural, using techniques that have existed for centuries.

And it brings people together. It has since ancient times. And will continue to do so for thousands of years more.

My favorite note I jotted down was from Chuck Wagner (his family started Caymus) quoting his father -- "A bottle of wine can turn four strangers into friends."

I know that our craft is special and the future for Michigan wine is bright, with incredible stories and passion behind every glass. If you're opening a bottle of Michigan wine tonight - cheers. You're part of our story.

Let me know what you think - either in the comments or, better yet, stop by this weekend and let's talk.
