you might know the village vanguard as home to some of the greatest live records ever made -- and the cannonball adderley sextet's "in new york" LP is one of them, taped there on january 12th and 14th, 1962

led by julian "cannonball" adderley on alto, his brother nat on cornet, yusef lateef on tenor, flute and oboe, joe zawinul on piano, sam jones on bass and louis hayes on drums, it opens with cannonball introducing the band to the room

then the sextet launches into jimmy heath's jazz waltz "gemini" in a set marked by the band members' original compositions. lateef brings two of his own tunes, "planet earth" and "syn-anthesia", and zawinul's "scotch and water" turns up on side 2

our house copy is the 1984 original jazz classics reissue -- one of more than 30 of cannonball's LPs on our shelves here at the kissa

fittingly, coltrane's own 1961 vanguard recordings take over our turntables starting sunday -- four nights, played on the anniversary of their original performance date 65 years ago

do you have a favorite vanguard date? or maybe an adderley session you find yourself coming back to over and over again?

craft recordings launched its jazz dispensary imprint in april 2016 with the "cosmic stash" box set for record store day -- and this year it turns ten

so on thursday, october 22nd we're celebrating with three of its new reissues, spinning on the house system from 5:30 to 8

roger glenn's "reachin'" (fantasy, 1977) is latin jazz on flute and vibes, produced by none other than larry and fonce mizell. glenn is the son of trombonist and vibist tyree glenn, who played with cab calloway, duke ellington and louis armstrong (we've got 3 tyree glenn LPs on our shelves, too)

woody shaw's "song of songs" was his second album for contemporary, cut in los angeles in september 1972 with george cables, henry franklin and woodrow theus II -- all four tunes are his. both are new top shelf reissues, mastered all-analog by kevin gray

then there's studio g's "nature's world," 20 library cues the label says were written for nature documentaries in 1982, back on "terratopia" splatter vinyl as of october 16th

it's free, no cover -- come hear it with us at 667 franklin ave in crown heights, brooklyn! which jazz dispensary reissue should we pull next?

before he wrote the theme from Mission: Impossible, before the jazz-funk score to steve mcqueen's Bullitt, there was this gem of a jazz LP

"Lalo = Brilliance: The Piano of Lalo Schifrin" was issued as part of Roulette Records' Birdland Series in 1962.

schifrin was still dizzy’s piano player when he cut this session, and he brought gillespie’s alto man leo wright along on sax and flute. the incomparable jimmy raney is on guitar, art davis on bass, rudy collins is behind the drum kit, and willie rodriguez works the congas and bongos all the way through

it’s a jazz record with latin blood. there's early bossa nova on “Desafinado” and “An Evening in São Paulo,” a great take on monk’s “Rhythm-A-Ning” with a little extra swagger, and diz + george russell's big band killer “Cubano Be” rebuilt for the sextet

jazz expert leonard feather wrote the liner notes and that equals sign on the cover is doing honest work. it's a brilliant LP and one we don't often see mentioned

it's just one of the 5,000+ vintage jazz records that make up our house library here at kissa kissa. come sit with us sometime soon

between our dedicated listening nights for her 7-LP "four women" box set and the advance listening we're hosting tomorrow night for her new verve remixed LP, you already know we have a huge soft spot in our hearts for the high priestess of soul. so we figured we'd kick off our new "sample cellar" series with nina simone, whose vocals are sampled on jay-z and kanye west’s “new day”

she recorded “feeling good” in new york in january 1965 for the "i put a spell on you" LP, issued on philips, and sang the opening lines with no band behind her

kanye west, rza, and mike dean produced “new day” for "watch the throne" in 2011, built on her vocal run passed through an auto-tune filter. (hova and ye both rap about their future as fathers on it)

"i put a spell on you" is on our shelves, one of 12 simone records in our house collection of over 5,000 old school jazz vinyl albums here at kissa kissa.

come for a listen with us sometime at 667 franklin ave in crown heights, brooklyn

we're closed today while a plumber fixes a leaky pipe -- don't worry, the records stayed dry.

we're back open tomorrow, tuesday, at 5:30pm, and at 7pm we're hosting the vinyl listening party for laura elkeslassy's "ya ghorbati | divas in exile": folk and sacred music from the maghreb, with laura and the producers taking questions in the backyard after the record. free, no cover.

in march 1965, jimmy smith set up at the lighthouse in hermosa beach with quentin warren on guitar and a young billy hart on drums. the tapes sat unreleased for sixty-one years -- until the verve record club (Verve Records) pressed 2,500 copies this fall.

we're spinning the champ: live in hermosa beach tonight, sunday, october 11th -- needle drops around 7pm. free -- no cover, no ticket. reserve a table at the link in bio.

it's hard to believe that thelonious monk wrote 'round midnight -- one of the cornerstones of the jazz canon -- at the start of his career in his early 20s

cootie williams recorded it first, in 1944, and monk cut his own version three years later for blue note in 1947. (the version you're listening to came a decade later, from "thelonious himself," in 1957 -- just monk, alone at the piano)

it's monk's birthday today, the 109th anniversary of his birth. join us as we spin some of our favorite of his LPs from our house collection here

do you have a favorite monk record or era?
