What a lovely surprise this week — Book Society got a shout out for being one of the best local shopping destinations in East Bay Magazine’s Best of the East Bay 2026!

We’re a bookstore, a wine lounge, a cozy place to land — and yes, a great place to shop, and a great place to take a break from shopping. Thank you, East Bay Magazine for noticing, and to every one of you who walks through our door when wandering through our beautiful neighborhood. We’re so grateful. ❤️

There’s a novel we can never keep on the shelf: Donna Tartt’s The Secret History. It’s a favorite around here, and pretty much goes out the door as fast as we can reorder it.

Paris Paloma named her new album, The Fatal Flaw, after a line from that book. So obviously when our friends at The Warfield Theatre - SF asked if we wanted to send someone to see her, the answer had to be yes!

Paris Paloma is a singer, songwriter, and Pre-Raphaelite-inspired visual artist whose songs run on myth, painting, and the kind of literary references book people like us appreciate. She’ll be at The Warfield on Thursday, September 24 and we have two tickets for one of you and whoever you bring.

HOW TO ENTER
— Like this post
— Follow Book Society® & The Warfield Theatre - SF
— Tag a friend in the comments (each tag is another entry)

We’ll draw a winner on Friday, September 11 and DM them from Book Society®.

If you’d rather not leave it to chance, tickets are here: https://www.axs.com/events/1438516/paris-paloma-tickets?skin=goldenvoice

Just a little something special for our community — good luck! 🎟️📖

Last night the shop was packed for another Book & Wine Trivia Night 🍷📚 — a great mix of regulars and first-timers, all squeezed in for three rounds: wine, books, and (our personal favorite) wine in books.

The win finally went to a team who’s been circling the winners’ circle for months now, and last night they knocked it out of the park. The runner-up team walked away with some great book prizes too, and honestly, everyone left having picked up a little more wine knowledge along the way.

Thanks to everyone who filled the room and brought their A-game — and congrats to our newly crowned champs. See you at the next one!

September’s Book & Wine Pairings are here — and this month, we’re going back to school 📚🍷

The theme is Read It Then, Read This Now. We went looking for the books that made us readers in the first place: the ones assigned in fifth grade, the ones read under a blanket with a flashlight, the ones whose covers we’d know anywhere. Then we found their grown-up counterparts. Consider it continuing education. 🤓

Here’s what’s on the syllabus:
➡️ If you loved My Side of the Mountain… read Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton + KOLONNE NULL Rosé (alcohol removed)
➡️ If you loved Island of the Blue Dolphins… read Wandering Stars by Tommy + Brooks Wine Renewal 2024 Pinot Gris
➡️ If you loved The Very Hungry Caterpillar… read Butter by , tr. Polly Barton + Neri Etna Wine Etna DOC Bianco 2023
➡️ If you loved Bridge to Terabithia… read My Friends by Fredrik Backman + Belden Barns 2024 Rosé of Pinot Noir, Syrah & Grenache
➡️ If you loved Paddington… read Vanishing Treasures by Katherine Rundell + SCRIBE. Winery 2025 Nouveau of Pinot Noir
➡️ If you loved The Monster at the End of This Book… read Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor + Ehlers Estate 2023 R&D Cabernet Franc
➡️ If you loved The Little Prince… read Orbital by Samantha Harvey + Johan Vineyards 2022 Murmuration Red
➡️ If you loved Ready Player One… read Snow Crash by + Rall Wines Red 2023, Swartland (Culture Wine Co.)

Our first Off the Mat: A Yoga Book Club met Sunday, and it was a beautiful morning of conversation, reflection, and lots of new connections.

It’s a book club for anyone who is curious about digging into yoga philosophy and ways to carry their practice beyond the postures and out into the world. We integrated some journaling and meditation with rich conversation about Part One of Deborah Adele’s The Yamas & Niyamas, a study of the first two limbs of yoga.

Thanks to everyone who came and shared so generously. Can’t wait to dig into part two in October!

Here’s what’s next for practices both on and off the mat:
🧘‍♀️ Sun, Sept 6 — Sunday in the Stacks: Yin Yoga. Slow and grounding poses, mimosas after.
🥣 Sun, Oct 4 — Nourish: Gentle Yoga + Healthy Bites. Something a little special.
📖 Sun, Oct 11 — Off the Mat, Part Two: the Niyamas. Missed the first one? That’s OK, Part Two stands on its own.

Register for all three at booksociety.social.

Today’s the day... It’s the final day of our August Book & Wine lineup, so if there’s a pairing you’ve been meaning to come back for, come back for it (if it’s still here...!) 😮

Tuesday we turn the shelves over and September begins (and, no, we’re not giving any hints before then!)

The other last call is for our members: early bird pricing on the Books & Bees Point Reyes Retreat ends tomorrow, August 31. Two nights at Olema House next February, a fireside book club, an elephant seal hike, a meadery tour, and a farm-to-fork dinner. It’s going to be magic. And it’s just for members, so no time like the present to join!

We just love to host a good party! Last night we had another chance, celebrating a big milestone birthday with Angela 🎉🎂

We did it all: Whisk Cake Creations 🇵🇭🇺🇸 cake, bubbles, charcuterie (all from our Celebrations Menu) plus pours of our Book Society x BROC CELLARS house wine. 🥂 It was a festive fun time surrounded by good girlfriends and lots and lots of books.

Happy birthday, Angela!

Thinking about your own celebration? Smaller groups can book right on our website under Bookings, or DM us for details about how to book the whole space out for a full private event.

Last night the community came out for City on the Edge.

Jonathan Weber (author, founding editor-in-chief of The SF Standard, among many other things) and Frances Dinkelspiel (co-founder of Berkeleyside ) got into it: how San Francisco became the tech capital of the world and what it cost along the way.

There were plenty of opinions on the current boom and where the Bay Area goes next. If you live here now, you totally get it.

Thanks to Jonathan and Frances for such an engaging evening, and to everyone who came out and asked such good questions. Nights like this are our favorite part of the job.

Last night the shop went full noir. Bold reds in the glasses, From the Dust on the table, and a room with opinions. 🍷

Our Tough & Tannic book club host Chris Deitch led the group through a lively conversation about David Swinson’s rural mystery like someone who’s spent a lot of quality time with crime stories 🔎🫆

Huge thanks to Chris for leading such a sharp discussion, and to everyone who showed up ready to dig in.

Copies of From the Dust are on our shelves if last night made you curious.

Trivia is back next Wednesday, and yes, there will inevitably be at least one wine question that will spark some spirited arguments 😉

Book & Wine Trivia Night is Wednesday, September 2, 6–8pm. Questions run from contemporary fiction to the classics to some good geeky wine stuff, so there’s a little something for everyone. Bring a team, or come solo and we’ll find you one. Prizes for the winners, and bragging rights until the next round. 🏆

It’s free and walk-ins are welcome, but seats fill up fast. RSVPs not necessary but definitely help us plan. See you next week!
