Summer is officially here, friends, and the warmth of June has begun to fill our beautiful club seats. While we are overjoyed at the talented artists that will be sharing our stage this month (whom many of you know and love), we are also exceedingly delighted to be commemorating June’s national distinction as Black Music Month.

For the fourth issue of Kats’ Korner, we will be taking you through a bit of the history of Black Music Month and how we plan on celebrating with our community and local Baltimore musicians! We are also excited to be featuring a special interview with legendary percussive musician, Warren Wolf!

Happy Birthday to one of the most magnificent lyric sound poets of our music, MILES DAVIS, born this day in 1926!

AFTER THE GIG. During the several weeks that Miles Davis played at the Keystone Korner In San Francisco in the early 1970s, he used to like to spend some time after the second set listening in my office to different kinds of music. One minute he would want to listen over and over to a bass line on a particular Marvin Gaye record, followed by a couple of listens to a Fats Navarro solo on “Opus X” from a Billy Eckstine “aircheck” LP, then Roy Ayers “Red, Black & Green” followed by Freddie Webster’s glowing “Yesterdays” with Jimmy Lunceford’s Orchestra. Then Miles would go back to his hotel in Union Square. - Todd Barkan
