Waynesville’s UPSTREAM REBELLION returns to Jack of the Wood this SATURDAY 11/7 with high-energy original & traditional bluegrass rooted in the rich musical legacy of the Appalachian Mountains. Shows starts at 8:30 pm!

Born in the heart of Western North Carolina, the band’s members were raised on front porch jams and in festival fields — and came together in college through a shared love for bluegrass music, a deep respect for their Appalachian heritage, and a passion for playing music that brings people together.

UPSTREAM REBELLION’s music blends time-honored standards with original compositions, creating a sound that resonates with both authenticity & innovation, reflecting the beauty of the WNC mountains they call home, and celebrating the community, history, & culture that inspires them.

The band sees bluegrass as “more than a genre”. “It’s a shared experience, passed down and reimagined with every note.” They say they “play to keep the grit, joy, and soul” of that tradition alive, “while making space for the new” . . . “honoring the old-time roots” but “pushing upstream with modern drive and youthful fire”.

Whether pickin’ on a festival stage, a local front porch, or a college green, UPSTREAM REBELLION strives to carry the time-honored bluegrass tradition “forward with heart, honesty, and high energy — creating spaces where everyone feels like part of the family.”

Every bit of that is evident in the band’s debut album, "Headwaters" (December 2025), a mix of traditional bluegrass, storytelling, and soulful lyrics that has been highly praised in bluegrass circles.

We’re kicking off Halloween weekend at Jack of the Wood with a “MACABARET” starring Brooklyn goth-folk duo Charming Disaster — featuring special guest TOYBOX , Asheville’s own “Cartoon Witch” extraordinaire — on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30TH — starting at 8:30pm!

Known for their interactive shows & masterful stagecraft, ELLIA BISKER & JEFF MORRIS have been performing playfully dark songs about myth, magic, & the macabre in theatrical live performances captivating audiences across the U.S. & Europe since 2012.

Inspired by traditional murder ballads and the gothic humor of Edward Gorey, Lemony Snicket, & Tim Burton — mixed with the dramatic flair of cabaret — the duo’s story-songs combine vocal harmonies & clever lyrics with ukulele, guitar, & virtuosic foot percussion, drawing listeners into a spooky, offbeat universe of paranormal romance, con artists, circus performers, the afterlife, & beyond!

In their Musical Oracle show, songs are selected by chance by audience members who draw cards from the Oracle Deck — a tarot-style divination that straddles the line between concert and theatre.

The duo has released 7 critically acclaimed albums to date, including the “deeply imaginative pop songs with an experimental and theatrical flair” of their most recent record, 2025’s “The Double”.

Friday night’s special guest TOYBOX is “an inexplicable blend of comedy, storytelling, puppetry, and clowning” well known in Asheville’s avant-garde circles. The creation of KEITH SHUBERT, an award-winning artist who has been described as “one of the most unique performers working today”, TOYBOX creates live performance spectacles & unique works of puppet theatre that are like nothing you’ve seen at Jack before — trust us!

Asheville’s Lenny Pettinelli & Friends bring the party back to Jack of the Wood this FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23rd at 8:30pm! Lenny Pettinelli Music

With stylish grooves and backbeat that just won’t stop, Lenny plays keys & synth for ears both discerning & novice. And he puts on a helluva show!

Hailing from Los Angeles & happily relocated to Asheville (where he’s been a long-time member of supergroup The Empire Strikes Brass), Pettinelli has worked on all sides of the music industry — from production to performance to promotion.

With a diverse background in jazz, rock, funk, reggae, folk, R&B, & electronic music, Pettinelli has played piano & keyboard on dozens of records since his early 20s — adding singing, production, harmonic arrangement & education hats to his skill set since.

Lenny and his crew of musician pals always bring the heat — and a funky, rowdy, eclectic mix of music and good vibes!

The Darren Nicholson Band returns to Jack of the Wood this THURSDAY 10/22 to host a SPECIAL EDITION of our legendary BLUEGRASS JAM — starting at 7pm!

Grammy-nominee & 13-time IBMA winner DARREN NICHOLSON has been playing mountain music since his youth here in WNC. You’d be hard pressed to find a more accomplished mandolinist or singer-songwriter — or a nicer fella. Darren has made it his mission to create shows that are genuine, fun-witted, and designed to make everyone feel right at home.

Joining Darren on vocals are seasoned full-time band member AVERY WELTER (guitar) along with Avery’s former Shedhouse Trio partners SARAH GRIFFIN (upright bass) and BRADY WALLEN (banjo), both of whom are now full-time members of The Darren Nicholson Band as well.

This expanded full-time lineup brings together a powerhouse of Appalachian musicians with deep roots in traditional bluegrass and a shared passion for music, reflecting Darren’s continuing commitment to evolving his approach to bluegrass.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled . . . this means new sounds and new material. I can’t wait to see what this new chapter holds. And I think folks who come out to see the new band will be as blown away by their music as I am.”

This newest iteration of the band is rooted in the sounds of the Appalachian mountains yet unafraid to explore new territory — with strong instrumental interplay, distinctive vocal harmonies, original material, and the energy of four musicians who are deeply connected to the music.

We’re excited to welcome Atlanta’s STRANGER COMPANY back to Jack of the Wood this SATURDAY 10/17 starting at 8:30pm!

Comprised of DAVIS WYNN (vocals/guitar), NICK PEDERSEN (vocals/bass), and JOSH NEWTON (drums), the band blends funk, jazz, and Southern rock into an electrifying “rock ’n’ roll alternative” sound.

With a setlist comprising original music as well as dynamic covers (ranging from the Talking Heads to Alice in Chains), STRANGER COMPANY knows how to turn any venue — from major festivals to ATL dive bars — into a high-energy celebration!

Bristol VA’s “Postmodern Minnie Pearl” — Momma Molasses — & her full band are back at Jack of the Wood this FRIDAY 10/16 with tear-in-your-b**r country to get your honky-tonk’ on — starting at 8:30pm!

With a sweet, rolling contralto which scales over homespun finger-picked guitar, Momma’s sound is warm, rich, & passionate — familiar yet fresh — and uniquely her own. Her songwriting is smart, spunky, & heartfelt, blending old-time, classic country, Piedmont blues, swing, Appalachian, and bluegrass.

MOMMA MOLASSES is the musical project of singer-songwriter Ellen “Ella” Patrick. The Moore County, NC native grew up surrounded by music — from her parents’ 60s folk vinyl to her church’s bluegrass band to old-timers at local festivals — and learned stringed instruments at an early age, playing Dylan & Haggard tunes her uncle taught her.

Encouraged by family, neighbors, and a music legend or two (including Roy Acuff’s former bass player, Clyde Maness), Patrick honed her talents at the Swannanoa Gathering — which opened her eyes to the importance of WNC’s musical heritage — and at Warren Wilson College, where she studied old-time & bluegrass. Gigs & jams in broken-down bars & upscale breweries followed, propelling her toward a dedicated music career.

Momma released her first EP in 2016, followed by two full-length albums — 2017’s “Anthems from a Broken Heart” & 2023’s “Take Me to the Country” — & multiple singles — all available on Bandcamp or wherever you stream! And there’s more in the works!

Comparisons to Patsy Cline & “Mother” Maybelle might be inevitable — but this Dixie Queen has a voice all her own — and y’all don’t want to miss it!
