The Old Chevrolette Set is back at Jack of the Wood this SATURDAY 9/19 starting at 8:30pm!

David Zoll & Laura Blackley perform old-school country duets (and play guitar) à la George & Tammy, Gram & Emmylou, and Loretta & Conway. Tom Pittman (host of WNCW’s “Country Gold”) plays pedal steel. The band is rounded out by a solid rhythm section comprised of Cary Fridley on bass and Dave Perkins on drums.

Cruising with the CHEVROLETTE is always a good time . . . vocal harmonies swimmin’ in pedal steel that you can dance to . . . this ain’t no jet-set band!

Meschiya Lake & The Moodswingers — with featured guitarist Emeline O'Rourke — brings a funky, bluesy, vintage Big Easy jazz vibe to Jack of the Wood this FRIDAY 9/18 starting at 8:30pm!

After years on the road stateside and around the globe with circuses, buskers, & jazz bands, Lake relocated post-pandemic from her decades-long New Orleans home base to the mountains of WNC. Here, the acclaimed punk jazz pioneer brings a unique new energy to the local music scene, layering her vibrant, powerful vocals over everything from sultry swing bands to honky-tonk strings.

Per THE NEW YORKER, “Lake rocks back on her heels, lifts her chest, and opens her throat like an air raid siren to croon in a thrilling pre-microphone style that . . . can make you feel by turns as though you were shivering around a campfire in a railroad yard or drinking in a Budapest nightclub in 1938.”

And THE NEW ORLEANS TIMES-PICAYUNE says “She sang a Bessie Smith blues with the line, ‘I’m as good as any woman in your town.’ In New Orleans music, that’s a bold statement — but she is, and better, too.”

We have that Nashville-to-Asheville vibe this weekend at Jack of the Wood, y’all — with our second Music City headliner — Andruw Thompson — making his JACK debut this SATURDAY 9/12 starting at 8:30pm!

Shaped by years of performing on Nashville’s Broadway — including over 3 in residency at the legendary Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge — the Michigan-born singer, guitarist, and entertainer blends powerhouse vocals, blues-soaked guitar, country, rock, and soul into an electric, eclectic ensemble of music!

With powerhouse vocals and sharp, lived-in storytelling, Thompson’s sound carries the soul of John Mayer and the grit of Darius Rucker — wrapped in a modern country-rock edge that feels both timeless and current.

Thompson has built his live shows around one thing: making the crowd part of it! After years of playing packed Nashville rooms night after night, he’s bringing that same high-energy, anything-can-happen atmosphere to Asheville.

Expect big vocals, guitar-driven favorites, unexpected requests, singalongs, and a show that changes depending on the room — and what y’all request to hear!

California-born, Nashville-based Americana artist Stacy Antonel makes her Jack of the Wood debut this FRIDAY 9/11 starting at 8:30pm — with a full band including MATTICK FRICK (drums), IAN WADE (bass), ANDY ARNOLD (guitar), & BLAKE HENSON (steel)!

Imagine Tammy Wynette crossed with the Ventures and you’ll have a good sense of this genre-defying singer-songwriter. Antonel blends her passion for classic country, jazz, and surf rock into a fresh hybrid of musical styles that feels both vintage and hyper-modern — think “Cosmic Dive Bar Country” . . .

Antonel’s personal story is also a reflection of this combination of influences. Born and raised three blocks from the beach in San Diego, she fell in love with classic country music through a twist of fate: the dollar record bin at a thrift store. Soon after, she started a successful country cover band called Ginger Cowgirl before relocating to Nashville in 2017 to pursue a career as a songwriter and recording artist.

In the studio, Antonel followed her critically-praised 2022 debut album ‘Always the Outsider” with the 2025 EP, “The Seahorses: Volume 1”, backed by heavy hitters Ethan Ballinger (Miranda Lambert), Joe Reed (Merle Haggard), Paul Sgroi (Josh Hedley) and San Diego jazz phenom Tony Econom.

The Darren Nicholson Band is hosting a SPECIAL EDITION of our legendary BLUEGRASS JAM here at Jack of the Wood this THURSDAY 9/10 starting at 7pm!

Grammy-nominee & 13-time IBMA winner DARREN NICHOLSON has been playing mountain music since his youth here in WNC. You’d be hard pressed to find a more accomplished mandolinist or singer-songwriter — or a nicer fella. Darren has made it his mission to create shows that are genuine, fun-witted, and designed to make everyone feel right at home.

Joining Darren on vocals are seasoned full-time band member AVERY WELTER (guitar) along with Avery’s former Shedhouse Trio partners SARAH GRIFFIN (upright bass) and BRADY WALLEN (banjo), both of whom are now full-time members of The Darren Nicholson Band as well.

This expanded full-time lineup brings together a powerhouse of Appalachian musicians with deep roots in traditional bluegrass and a shared passion for music, reflecting Darren’s continuing commitment to evolving his approach to bluegrass.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled . . . this means new sounds and new material. I can’t wait to see what this new chapter holds. And I think folks who come out to see the new band will be as blown away by their music as I am.”

This newest iteration of the band is rooted in the sounds of the Appalachian mountains yet unafraid to explore new territory — with strong instrumental interplay, distinctive vocal harmonies, original material, and the energy of four musicians who are deeply connected to the music.

Asheville’s Ben Balmer returns to Jack of the Wood with his full band — Mattick Frick, Craig Kellberg, and Kate Leigh Bryant — FRIDAY 9/4 for a night of rootsy, lyric-driven original Americana, folk & blues music — starting at 8:30pm!

A meticulous craftsman and thoughtful songwriter, Balmer’s music is colored by musical influences from Bela Bartok to the J. Geils Band as well as novelists as varied as C. S. Lewis and Cormac McCarthy.

Originally hailing from Michigan, Ben learned the harmonica at 13 and quickly adding guitar to his repertoire before starting performing in clubs a few years later. In 2008, he hit the road, busking across the U.S. before breaking into the Austin music scene, making the move to Asheville in 2022 after 14 years in Texas.

He’s been touring continuously ever since — and hard at work in the studio! Performing across the Southeast, he plays from house concerts to songwriter festivals and most everything in between while continuing his involvement in the international harmonica community as a Seydel Harmonicas-endorsed artist.

On FRIDAY 9-25 — DOLLY DAY — we’ve invited some of our favorite musicians to come together for “ANGEL WHEN SHE FLIES: CELEBRATING THE HEART OF APPALACHIA”, a night of song honoring THE QUEEN OF COUNTRY MUSIC hosted by honky-tonk angel ALISSA NORDMOE and her RODEO — with special guests VADEN LANDERS, ASHLEY HEATH, and more! Friday, September 25th — 9/25 (9 to 5!) — we’re celebrating the life, legacy, and music of the queen and matriarch of country music at Jack of the Wood.

Nordmoe & the Rodeo will be taking the stage and playing Dolly songs all night long, joined by some of our favorite Appalachian musicians making special guest appearances and singing a Dolly song or two with us. 🎶

We’ll be serving up some of Dolly’s favorite Southern comforts, too — think chicken & dumplings + an iced tea martini. 😋

And because Dolly’s heart has always been as big as her voice, we’ll be raising money for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

So pull on your boots, bring your best Dolly energy, and come celebrate one of the most incredible and inspiring women there’s ever been.
