Spring is in full swing, so we will all be rolling out the white wines by the pallet.

A lot of folks still forget that Bordeaux is home to some fabulous whites, in addition to their famous reds. This one is a classic, being made up of mostly Sauvignon Blanc (85%), with the remainder being Semillon.

Loads of explosive grapefruit and guava, with green pineapple and Granny Smith hanging out in the background from the Sauv Blanc, and that slightly creamy, beeswax note which one gets from the Semillon.

You may remember the reds from these guys, as we have emailed about them in the past, but this is the first time we have seen this white.

This is a screaming deal.

We are in last days of peak shellfish season and the most traditional wine from Europe for these briny beasts is Muscadet from the Loire valley of France.

Time to get your fill, before the heat of summer takes over.

Crisp lemon, green apple, grapefruit skin and passionfruit, with zingy acid and a bright and clean finish. Did I mention that it was stupid cheap?

The name pretty much says it all on this one.

Guillaume Gonnet is known primarily for Chateauneuf du Pape, as they make 4 different versions, amongst their other wines.

Both Jeb Dunnuck and Robert Parker have high praise for these wines, and after tasting this one, I can see why.

A classic southern Rhone blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, it has seen little oak, so it is bursting with bright berry fruit of red currant, pie cherries and raspberry, with that underpinning of brooding pepper, herb and smoke, which define these wines.

2023 is shaping up to be another scrumptious vintage, which has softer tannins, but still lots of extract. Specific wine scores are just starting to trickle in.

Jeb Dunnuck has not reviewed this wine yet, but says this about the producer: “Domaine Guillaume Gonnet is the personal label of Guillaume and Kelly Gonnet. They produce wines from multiple appellations in the Southern Rhône, and the wines are terrific across the board.”

With tariffs always being a question mark these days on all incoming wines from Europe, it is time to load the cellar.

Final dispatch from The Bourbon Trail…I was not really surprised that my favorite Kentucky distillery didn’t disappoint. Preservation distillery is tiny (8 employees?) and has some of the most ridiculous stocks of old bourbon (think early ‘80s Stitzel- Weller type of stuff) that they can pull from for blends. This is the stuff. Don’t let the plain label fool you.

Special Spirits Correspondent checking in from The Bourbon Trail…yesterday was a tour of the Heaven Hill rickhouses. Well, really old one and a brand (ish) new one. Both were fascinating to see but the Rickhouse Y (c. mid 1930s?) was wonderful. It felt like being in the bowels of some great old ship. Oh, and tasting whiskey in that environment is not to be missed.

The Heirloom Grains flight at New Riff Distilling. Unfortunately the Red Turkey Wheat and Blue Clarage Corn are all sold out but the Balboa Rye is out there and we will keep trying to get it in WA. I love the idea of using heirloom/ heritage grains in whiskey.

If you buy Bourbon at Compass, you probably know that we love New Riff. We regularly carry a few of their regular releases but I was out to try the heritage grain expressions that we can’t get in WA. They are good. Really good.

Super Tuscans are an interesting category.

Originally conceived as a method of identifying super high end reds from Tuscany, which incorporated grapes from Bordeaux in the blend, thus making them ineligible for the traditional appellation classifications, it has now morphed into being used to designate any blend from there, which doesn’t legally fit into any other category.

This wine is a throwback to the original concept of blending Cabernet with Sangiovese, and comes from a vintage which is considered to be a legend in the making, 2021, but this one keeps the price in check.

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cab Franc and 20% Sangiovese, it has the bright and zingy character of red raspberries, and pie cherries from the Sangiovese, wintergreen and hazelnuts from the Cab Franc and the blueberry, cassis and dark chocolate from the Cab. Great balance, great structure and incredibly versatile.

Robert Parker has given this part of Tuscany a ‘95’ overall for 2021. Oh, it also has a ‘91’ point score from the Wine Spectator, so I guess they like it quite a bit as well.

As top Super Tuscans often reach three figures and more in price, this one is a real shocker.
