Right of Admission Reserved Darkroom opened in October 2011 and was the first dedicated music venue to open after the Christchurch earthquakes. We have gigs every Thursday, Friday and Saturday ranging in style from folk, indie and country, to punk, metal and rock. We have a range of local NZ craft beers and a small tasty bar menu. Beyond Music - Special Interest Night Vol 2 is coming up this Friday evening! Doors open 7pm with three short presentations from Darkroom regulars from 7:30pm about their work, studies, hobbies and special interests!

We're excited to have Cameron Taylor on board as one of the guest speakers! By day he is a Portfolio Analyst for a major energy company, but you might recognise him from local stoner-doom band Enfire.

Cameron's work job involves running complex stochastic models to forecast the New Zealand Electricity Market, and provide guidance to the business on how much electricity we generate from our hydro stations in any given week, and how we want to shape our Portfolio over the next 5 years.

This gives Cameron a unique insight into the hugely complex NZ Electricity Market. He hopes his talk will help demystify some of the black box that is the electricity market, so us ordinary folk can understand how it all works and why our power bills are so damn expensive.

Introducing Michael Armstrong, our final speaker for this Friday's Beyond Music - Special Interest Night Vol 2

Michael's topic is The Psychology of Street Performance

Street performance is an ancient art that differs from most performances in one important way: no one has agreed to watch it.

The audience has not purchased a ticket, and are probably busy heading somewhere else, so street performers have to employ a range of subtle psychological tricks to engage an audience and to get them to hang around.

This talk will break down how the ideas of influence by Robert Cialdini are used in street performance, and likely in every other area of your life too!

Michael has performed around the world including at Edinburgh Fringe and World Buskers Festival. He originally studied Circus at Circo Arts before touring with Circus Aotearoa. Career highlights have included performing his show Blown Away with the Tauranga Symphonia, and being invited to talk at TedX Wellington on the use of psychology in street theatre.

Time to introduce our next speaker for Beyond Music - Special Interest Night Vol 2

🍸 Feather Shaw will be talking about gin 🍸

You might know Feather as the co-owner of Darkroom, but running this place is never gonna make us rich, so we also work day jobs.

In 2021 Feather found herself wandering into a local distillery and asking if she could have a job for "the summer"... Well it's been five summers since then and Feather's still working down there learning more and more about gin every day. Come hear about the history of gin, how it's made, and why it's still so popular today! From the 12th century juniper brews made by monks and alchemists as medicine, to the gin craze of the 17th century, laws such as The Gin Act of 1751, and how hundreds of years later this drink once known as "mother's ruin" has bloomed in popularity in New Zealand in the past decade.
