Exploring the art of coffee isn’t just about mastering the right techniques, it’s also about knowing what not to do. Here’s why these 5 mistakes matter and how to fix them 👇

1. Dirty steam wand
Milk bakes onto the hot wand in seconds and spoils your foam. Just make sure to purge the wand and wipe it right after every use 🥛

2. Unfiltered water
Espresso is over 90% water, so bad-tasting water means bad-tasting coffee. Hard water also leaves limescale in your machine. Use a filter and descale regularly 💧

3. Old beans
Beans lose flavour over time, and old ones give you a flat shot. Check the roast date and use your beans within 7–30 days of roasting 📅

4. Dirty portafilter
Old coffee oils make every new shot taste bitter. Rinse and dry your basket after each shot, to make sure it stay’s clean 🧽

5. Neglecting the drip tray
It overflows before you notice, and standing coffee attracts bacteria. Empty it every day and wash it weekly 🫧
