Located just beside the borders of Wicklow, Wexford and Carlow, Egans Bar sits in a picturesque area in the South East of Ireland. The Egan name was added to the premises in 1912, the pub having been formerly owned by the Doyle family who held it in operation since well before the 1800’s, making it a contender for one of the oldest family run country pubs in the country. Drop by and have a drink and a chat next time you are in the area.

Really is a very important part of our being and our spirit

In rural Ireland, the local pub is far more than just a place to enjoy a pint — it is often the beating heart of the community, especially for older men living alone. For many, the pub serves as a daily ritual, a lifeline to the outside world where stories are shared, names are remembered, and laughter flows as easily as the Guinness. It’s a warm, familiar place that offers connection in a life that may otherwise feel increasingly isolated, particularly as friends pass on and family moves away. A quiet stool at the bar can become a vital thread in the social fabric of an elderly man’s life — a space where he is seen, heard, and welcomed.

As rural towns grow quieter and services more scarce, these humble establishments take on an even greater significance. The pub becomes not only a social hub but often a source of emotional support, human contact, and mental well-being. It’s where birthdays are remembered, where grief is shared, and where the stories of the past are preserved and passed down. In a world that’s changing fast, and often forgetting its elders, the rural Irish pub quietly continues its role — as sanctuary, storyteller, and symbol of community.
