We are absolutely delighted to have been asked to be part of this fantastic addition to Sunderland’s rich heritage.
It is a real privilege that Grand Hotel Sunderland will be home to the L.S. Lowry Blue Plaque, celebrating the artist’s enduring connection to Seaburn and our beautiful coastline.
We look forward to sharing more information as the project progresses over the coming months and welcoming visitors to see this special tribute for themselves. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen. 👏
🎉 Great news for Sunderland's heritage!
We've just heard the funding is confirmed for a new L.S. Lowry blue plaque at the Seaburn Hotel (now the Grand).
Lowry spent the last 15 years of his life coming back to Seaburn again and again, sometimes staying for weeks at a time. The North Sea and the River Wear kept pulling him back — he walked here, stayed here, and painted here. Now that connection to our coast will be marked for good, right where it happened.
A big thank you to the Sunderland North Area Committee and our local councillors for getting the funding over the line. Support like this for local history means a lot to the community. 👏
The plaque now moves into design and ordering.......
