It’s Thursday! It’s 8 o’clock! It’s vinyl night!

Doctorin' The Tardis' by The Timelords was at No.1 on the UK singles chart on this day in 1988. The Timelords were Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty of the KLF. After having a number one hit, Bill Drummond published ‘The Manual’ with instructions on how to get to number one in the charts.

As a tribute we are playing a sci-fi themed set tonight.

Bring along your discs if you want to give them a spin!

It’s Thursday! It’s 8 o’clock and that means it is vinyl night here at The Hoy!

On this day in 1985 Paul Hardcastle’s ‘19’ was at the top of the UK Singles Chart. The song was unusual for a chart hit because it combined electronic music with a powerful anti-war message about the Vietnam War. Its title referred to the claim that the average age of an American combat soldier in Vietnam was just nineteen years old. The track used samples from television documentaries and interviews with veterans, creating a dramatic and thought-provoking sound that stood out from other pop records of the time.

‘19’ entered the UK chart in April 1985 and quickly climbed to number one, where it remained for five consecutive weeks. It became one of the biggest-selling singles of the year and helped establish Paul Hardcastle as a major figure in electronic music.

The song was particularly notable for its innovative production techniques, including the famous stuttered repetition of the word ‘nineteen’. These effects were groundbreaking at the time and influenced later developments in dance and electronic music. ‘19’ also achieved international success, reaching number one in several countries and earning Hardcastle widespread recognition. Today, it remains a classic 1980s recording and a powerful reminder of the human cost of war.

Tonight we will kick off with ‘19’ and some classic 1980’s 12” mixes. We then have some vintage E.P.s to play brought in by one of our regulars.

Bring along some discs and we will give them a spin for you.
