You arrive and there's a drink waiting. Dinner that first evening, so nobody has to think about where to eat. Breakfast both mornings. Checkout at noon rather than ten. And if we've a better room going spare, it's yours.

That's an Everbright Escape at The George. Four hundred years of oak beams and wood panelling in the heart of Penrith, with Ullswater fifteen minutes down the road and the Eden Valley on the doorstep.

September is a good month for it. The fells quieten down, the light turns, and the Lakes hand themselves back to whoever fancies them.
