Of course, that’s not all we’re known for, and with a vibrant atmosphere, stylish bar, spacious dining area and relaxing beer garden tucked away in the back, you’ll soon discover we’re perfect for all other occasions too, whether it’s catching up with mates over a large group booking or stealing us away for life’s biggest events through private venue hire. Plus, which would you rather – the same, old office, or the luxury of our quiet area – during your next work meeting? A building with centuries of stories to tell.
Welcome too… The history of the Jericho Tavern, Oxford.

The building is believed to date back to around 1650, although an inn may have stood on the site even earlier.
In 1688, Oxford antiquarian Anthony Wood recorded visiting the House on his way to Port Meadow.

The name Jericho was often given to inns on the outskirts of cities. When Oxford’s gates closed at sunset, late-arriving travellers needed somewhere to stay.
Inspired by the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, these inns offered a welcome to those who arrived too late to enter the city.

From Jericho House to the Jericho Tavern, the building has also been known as the Jericho and, for a time, the Philanderer and Firkin.
Different names, different eras — but a place woven into the life of the neighbourhood.

The Jericho Tavern became a notable Oxford live music venue, helping launch the story of bands including Radiohead and Supergrass.
From a historic local building to a stage associated with some of Britain’s best-known musical exports.

Centuries of stories, countless memories, and a little piece of Oxford history right here on Walton Street.

Whilst we are closed for a little glow up, we are committed to keeping the history of the Jericho Tavern strong, so next time you’re in, enjoy our new look but also take a moment to appreciate the history around you.

It’s starting to come together, and we’re getting a little closer to the Jericho’s next chapter. 👀🖤

There are still a few things to tick off the list, but it’s exciting to see the plans becoming reality.

A place with so much history deserves a future just as full of stories, and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back to make them.

For now, here’s a little glimpse of how things are shaping up. 🎸

One Oxford pub. One band with a different name. And the beginnings of a story that would go on to change music history.

The band that would become Radiohead first started rehearsing at their school in Abingdon, Oxfordshire by the mid 80’s they would go on to play as “On A Friday” at the Jericho Tavern.

The band played roughly six early shows over five years at the venue, including a performance in 1991 where they caught the attention of EMI Record leading to their record contract and name change to Radiohead.

They picked “Radio Head” from the sixth track of Talking Heads’ album True Stories.

Long before the worldwide tours, the iconic albums and Creep becoming a generational anthem, five school friends from Oxford were finding their feet as a band.

And the Jericho Tavern? We were part of the story.

From a local band rehearsing on Fridays to one of the most influential bands of their generation, it’s a pretty special piece of Oxford music history to have in our walls.

And it all started somewhere. ❤️
