The hospitality sector has come together to launch – a united campaign and petition calling for hospitality VAT to be reduced from 20% to 10%.

Spearheaded by chef and publican Tom Kerridge, we’re working alongside trade bodies across the sector, such as and , hospitality communities like , and you, businesses across hospitality, to say 10% VAT is fair for hospitality.

Our sector pays too much tax, and VAT is the single biggest lever the Government can pull to support venues, our customers, our high streets and our local communities.

This campaign is for everyone: businesses, customers, waiting staff, chefs, kitchen porters, bar staff, hotel teams, farmers, brewers, suppliers and producers.

Like, sign the petition and share this post – we need your support to reach a million signatures.

Spider Crab season is upon us once again. At this time of year spider crabs move to shallow waters where our inshore day-boat fleet catch them in their pots around our shores. We believe spider crab is one of the tastiest things to come out of the sea, yet sadly we export the vast majority of the spider crab caught here as the French, Spanish and Portuguese know how good it is.

To celebrate the season and keep the crabs in Cornwall, on Saturdays at lunch time, we’re offering a whole crab for just £20. So get some pals together to come get a taste of the best of Cornish shellfish and kick back for a long lazy lunch of crab picking, wine quaffing and joyous eating.

Booking is essential as numbers will be limited! Get booked in by the Thursday prior to guarantee a crab, one is perfect for sharing but the greedy amongst us would have one for themselves.

Grilled monkfish, cockles, wild garlic and a butter sauce. A quick outing was had in Zoe’s ‘09 Citroen Xsara Picasso, ‘Pablo’, to fetch some wild garlic not far from the pub. We used it to add springtime pungency in to this dish of grilled monkfish and cockles. If you want it, you can’t have it, it’s off the menu now, you should have come in this last week… 👋🐟

Bass crudo with apple mignonette and olive oil.

Here’s that bass from featured in our previous post. When you can work with fish of such supreme quality it makes sense to showcase it in a raw preparation. We make a mignonette with apple, onion and tarragon and use this to bring a fresh zip alongside the richness of extra virgin olive oil. The dressing compliments the bass, not overpowering it. We have this on as a snack to start your meal, when the palate is still pure to enjoy the delicacy of the fish. This fish was caught by Paul less than 5 miles from the pub and landed in Newquay harbour, a real taste of our piece of Cornwall.

We are very pleased to announce that we are now serving line-caught wild bass from . Paul fishes for bass on rod and line from one hook on his 4 metre boat out of Newquay harbour. This method allows him to release any fish which aren’t suitable, returning them unharmed back in to the ocean. Many people know of minimum landing sizes, but fishermen like Paul also release the largest fish whose breeding capacity is far more prolific and should always be released. This selectivity ensures stocks can be maintained and the fishery can continue to exist.

Alongside fishing using the most sustainable methods, Paul also catches to order - an arrangement incredibly rare in fishing. We let him know what we are after, he takes his boat out and once he has caught what he needs, he returns to shore.

Paul’s style of fishing not only ensures the most sustainable catch but also delivers a quality that is unparalleled, chefs such as Nathan Outlaw at have been buying fish from Paul for years and we are thrilled to be able to join the list of establishments that work with Paul. We are so proud that we can serve a fish of such impeccable quality in our local village pub. This particular fish was caught off of the beach at Crantock, less than 5 miles from the pub as the crow flies. It is currently on the menu in the form of a crudo, a truly delicious way to start your meal and a perfect taste of Cornwall that is on our doorstep. Thanks Paul!
