A new kind of 'old' pub, The Broad Chare offers all the best bits of a traditional ale-house - well-kept beer, honest food, friendly company, good cheer - with a fresh, modern touch. One of those pubs you thought had disappeared (along with whistling milkmen and red telephone boxes), it's the result of a happy partnership between Terry Laybourne's 21 Hospitality Group and Live Theatre, one of the country's leading new writing theatres.

We still can’t quite believe that our little pub has come 20th in this year’s The Good Food Guide 100 Best Pubs list!

What makes this recognition so special is that it all started with you, our wonderful and incredibly generous customers, who took the time to nominate us. Thank you! It’s also lovely recognition for our incredibly hard-working team, both front and back of house.

We’re in some great company too, and it’s fantastic to see so many of our North East friends on the list, including The Rat Inn, The Feathers Inn, and The Ship Inn Low Newton.

Back on the bar, be quick, this ale never hangs around long!

Legend has it that the shape of the glass was designed for coachmen in the 19th century, as they weren’t allowed to leave their coach unattended. The glass hung off their coach so they could be served without breaking the rules.

A lot of pubs ask for a shoe as a deposit when drinking from one of these to deter glass-thieves, so wear your nicest kicks when you’re in this week 😉
