🌿 DID YOU KNOW? FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE & LEA 🌿

Here at The Jug & Glass, we’re lucky enough to be surrounded by so much history — and one of the most famous names connected to our little village is Florence Nightingale.

Florence Nightingale spent much of her childhood at Lea Hurst, the Nightingale family home just up the road from us in Lea. Her family would spend several months of the year here, and Derbyshire remained an important part of Florence’s life. 

Interestingly, Florence herself wrote about her time at Lea Hurst:

“O happy six weeks at the Hurst, where I found my business in this world.”

It was also during her early life in Derbyshire that her interest in caring for others began to develop. Florence later recalled:

“the first idea I can recollect when I was a child was a desire to nurse the sick.”

She was known to help local people in need, taking medicine, food and other supplies to those who were unwell. 

After the death of her great-aunt Elizabeth Evans, Florence’s mother even suggested that Florence could turn Lea Hall into a nursing home. Florence felt she wasn’t ready for this at the time, and instead went to London — eventually leading her towards the nursing career that would make her famous around the world. 

There are also historic depictions of Florence at Lea Hurst, including an image held by the Science Museum Group showing her in the grounds of her Derbyshire home. The image itself was produced later, so it isn’t a contemporary photograph, but it gives a lovely glimpse of Florence’s connection with Lea. 

And one little piece of local history that we love is the long-standing story that The Jug & Glass has connections with Florence Nightingale’s nursing history. While the claim that this building itself was her “first hospice” is part of local tradition, the documented history is a little more complicated — so we’d rather share what we can actually evidence than turn a good local story into a fact!

Either way, there’s no doubt that Lea played a small but important part in the early life of one of the most famous nurses in history.

And we’re pretty proud to be part of the same little village. ♥️

WE’VE DONE IT AGAIN! 🥹🏆

We’re absolutely over the moon to have been awarded Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice 2026, placing the Jug & Glass Inn in the top 10% of restaurants and businesses worldwide! 🌍

This is the second year running now.. so a huge thank you is in order to every single person who has taken the time to leave us a review, visit us for a meal, stay with us, enjoy a drink by the fire or simply support our little village pub. ♥️
