Manchester's finest entertainment experience... music, food, wine and a unique atmosphere! Since its inception in 1998 Matt and Phred’s Jazz Club has striven to deliver the best in live music. The only true dedicated Jazz venue in the North-West of England Matt and Phred’s has a live act 6 nights of the week. Over the years the club has played host to some of the biggest names on the national and international jazz scene as well as funk, soul and blues legends gracing our stage. Wynton Marsalis, Lonnie Liston Smith, Adele, Kit Downes, Jamie Cullum and Kirsty Almeida are just a few of the faces that have attended Matt and Phred’s over the years, whether it was to play or just because of the name we have on the UK Jazz scene. On Monday nights we host Jam nights an open mic nights which help to keep the community of musicians in Manchester together. Tuesday’s // Wednesday’s & Thursday's are trio & quartet night’s where you often get to see some of the most talented musicians in the Uk playing raw stripped down versions of their music, often Nat Birchall, Stuart McCallum (The Cinematic Orchestra), Myke Wilson and Luke Flowers (The Cinematic Orchestra) can be found with a couple of other musicians playing fierce new material from 9pm. On weekend nights we try to secure the best in local and touring talent for the satisfaction of Mancunian music fans, from straight ahead Jazz, to African Rhythms to Latin Soul and all that’s in between there is never a disappointing act on Friday or Saturday. As well as providing a cornerstone to the UK jazz scene Matt and Phred’s is a central bar in Manchester’s Northern Quarter scene serving food and cocktails 7 nights a week with the kitchen open until midnight every night.

Amphitrio is an award-winning contemporary jazz trio from Bucharest, Romania, formed in 2023. The group brings together pianist and composer Andrei Petrache, bassist Mike Alex and percussionist Philip Goron, three versatile musicians with strong backgrounds in both classical and alternative music.

Their sound blends the atmospheric depth of Scandinavian jazz with the rich rhythmic language of the Balkans, resulting in a cinematic, expressive and highly dynamic musical identity shaped entirely by original compositions.

Since its formation, Amphitrio has gained international recognition, performing at major festivals such as Jazz in the Park, Gărâna Jazz Festival, Baku Jazz Festival and JazzFest Budapest. In 2024, the trio completed an international tour across 11 countries, followed by further key appearances in 2025, and is set to tour the United States in 2026.

Their music has won multiple prizes and earned praise for its refined balance between delicate textures and energetic interplay, establishing Amphitrio as a fresh and distinctive voice on the contemporary jazz scene.

Mat Walklate and James Lawley are two of the most highly regarded Blues musicians in the North, and have regularly performed at Matt & Phred’s both as a duo and within other full bands, notably with the great Franny Eubank.

Mat Walklate is a forceful, dynamic harmonica-player, with a rich, soulful baritone Blues singing style, with which he brings a sensational mix of classic melodious Blues tunes and original numbers to the stage.

James Lawley is a scintillating, powerful guitarist; a stalwart of the Manchester blues scene, James has played with almost everybody and to each performance brings his undeniable prowess, unfailingly wowing audiences with the sheer skill he plays with - it really is something to experience.

Together, this highly acclaimed duo will set the stage alight with a varied mix of classic Blues songs. In such a wonderfully intimate setting, whether you’re a Blues lover or new to the genre, you’re sure to absolutely love this performance.

The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.

Salsa De Cuba is a dynamic and passionate band led by Juan Sanchez and Reinier Bazán, two long-time friends who have been playing together for over 20 years. Hailing from Havana, Cuba, they bring the fiery energy and authenticity of Cuban music to every performance. Now based in the northwest of England, they've teamed up with Manchester drummer Laurie Agnew to create a unique blend of Salsa, Timba, and Bachata.

The band’s sound is all about energy and passion. Salsa De Cuba strives to play Cuban music as it exists today in Cuba, maintaining an authentic feel with every beat. Juan and Reinier’s Cuban upbringing ensures that the music is deeply rooted in tradition, while still bringing a fresh and modern edge. Their shared love for Timba brought Juan, Rei and Laurie together. The exciting blend of Salsa and Rumba gives Timba its energy. It's not always polite, but it always fills the dance floor. Alongside this enthusiasm for Timba, the band are committed to maintaining a love and respect for its roots - Salsa.

For Salsa De Cuba, the music is not just about the rhythms—it’s about creating an experience and making a connection with their audience. Whether it's a night of dancing, romancing, or enjoying plenty of rum, they aim to keep the energy high and the dance floors packed.

The Tigermen are a four piece authentic Rhythm and Blues band touring the North and Midlands. Expect high octane Chicago style music guaranteed to get you on your feet from the off!

The Tigermen are all seasoned players performing at venues both large and small as well as headline slots at festivals across the country. They have Jonny Jones singing and playing harmonica and sax, Ian Clyde on guitar and slide guitar, Robert Scott on bass and Bob Franklin on drums.

Zak Irvine is a Belfast-based jazz pianist and bandleader, originally from Bangor.

With a foundation in classical music, Zak has developed a polished and versatile piano style from a young age, which he now channels into jazz, exploring improvisation and complex harmonies with a natural ease.

Already making waves on the Irish jazz scene, Zak has performed two major shows at Scott’s Jazz Bar and two shows at the Courthouse Bangor, and his music will soon be heard at Brilliant Corners Jazz Fest and Magy’s Farm. His performances showcase a distinctive voice that blends classical roots with contemporary jazz influences, captivating audiences with both technical skill and emotional depth.

Inspired by the work of Robert Glasper, Taylor Eigsti, Herbie Hancock and Kiefer, Zak continues to create a sound that is uniquely his own. This project has been proudly funded by Dr Linley Hamilton MBE, supporting Zak’s ongoing artistic development. With a new release of original material on the horizon and a band featuring some of Ireland’s most promising young musicians, Zak Irvine is a name increasingly recognised for his artistry and promise.
