Hospitality is at the heart of our communities. Itās where we celebrate milestones, catch up with friends, create jobs and keep our streets alive. But right now, the industry is under more pressure than ever.
Thatās why weāre supporting Tom Kerridgeās campaign, calling on the Government to reduce hospitality VAT from 20% to 10%. Many European countries already recognise the value of hospitality with lower VAT rates - Ireland has recently reduced its rate from 13.5% to 9%, while countries like France, Spain and Italy also operate with lower hospitality VAT. The UK is now one of the highest-taxed hospitality sectors in Europe.
A lower VAT rate isnāt about increasing profits or cutting menu prices. The reality is that margins are so tight that many hospitality businesses arenāt making a profit at all - theyāre simply trying to keep their doors open. A VAT reduction would provide desperately needed breathing room, helping businesses survive, protect jobs and build a more stable future for the industry.
Hospitality is one of the UKās biggest employers, providing vital opportunities for young people. Yet around 21 hospitality venues are closing every week. This campaign is about giving the industry a united voice and ensuring there are still independent pubs, cafĆ©s, bars and restaurants for future generations to enjoy.
