Another closure. Another goodbye post. Another reminder that the places we love aren’t guaranteed to be here forever.

In our latest editorial, Last Orders for Hospitality?, we take a closer look at the growing pressures facing Manchester’s hospitality scene, and why the cost of staying open is becoming just as important a conversation as the cost of going out.

We’re here to play our part in keeping people going out, discovering somewhere new and supporting the places that make our city what it is.

Use the places you want to keep.

THE WEEKLY DROP: Pot Kettle Black

Pot Kettle Black is one of those Manchester breakfast spots that always seems to have a table worth sitting at.

Built around very good coffee and all-day brunch, the menu covers the classics alongside a counter of pastries from Manchester bakery Half Dozen Other - making it just as easy to stop in for coffee and a croissant as it is to settle in for breakfast.

We went firmly down the brunch route with French Toast and Eggs Benedict - one sweet, one savoury, and exactly the combination you want when choosing between the two feels unnecessary. The French Toast is the indulgent order, while the Eggs Benedict keeps things classic.

Coffee is taken just as seriously as the food, making PKB an easy city-centre morning stop, whether you have ten minutes or nowhere particularly urgent to be.

Come for brunch. Add a Half Dozen Other pastry for later. Always get the coffee.

THE WEEKLY DROP: Little Scarfs

Little Scarfs is one of those places we find ourselves returning to.

We’ve been for lunch, stayed into dinner, and seen it in full swing during Stock Party and each time, it feels like exactly the kind of neighbourhood restaurant Stockport does so well.

The menu keeps things beautifully simple: three courses for £22.50, with a set menu that changes every four to eight weeks. Enough time to find a favourite, but never long enough for things to feel too familiar.

Alongside the food, there’s a considered list of natural wines, sodas and filter coffee - and beyond the everyday restaurant, Little Scarfs regularly opens its doors to beautifully curated events and collaborations with brands, bringing something a little different to the space each time.

Come for the three courses. Order a bottle of something natural. Stay a little longer than planned.

New to the city: Amò by Salvi’s

Now open on Deansgate Mews, Amò is a brand-new concept by Salvi’s, bringing Italian drinking, dining and deli culture to the city.

Think £10 lunch deals, two spritzes for £10, Italian deli favourites and their frozen caffe crema for something a little sweeter.

Led by Sienna, the next generation of the Salvi’s family, it’s the kind of place made for easy lunches, sunny terrace drinks and a quick stop that turns into something a little longer.

Lunch, aperitivo, a little shopping in between. We know where we’re heading.
