Running On Empty

Brewery take their slice, the bills take the rest,
SE1 looks pretty but it’s crushing my chest.
Tube strike killed the footfall, costs hit the roof,
And the staff that I trained — well, they walked out as proof.

Fifty-seven years old, still stood behind the bar,
Grinning at strangers who’ve wandered in far.
The streets are half empty, the margins are thin,
But I’ll polish the pumps and I’ll welcome you in.

Some days the fire that once burned so bright
Flickers and fades like a Friday night light.
The passion’s still there but it’s buried deep down,
Beneath the rent rises and this worn London town.

I’m running on empty but still pulling through,
Because a landlord’s a landlord — it’s all that I knew.
