Not many people know this, but not only is John a top notch quizmaster, he's also a fighter pilot for the Red Arrows! He had a busy day yesterday flying over Buckingham Palace at Trooping the Colour but he somehow still found time to write up a BANGER of a quiz and is back in Huddersfield to present it tonight!

If you know you know 😍

And if you don't know, all that foam stuck to the glass is called "lacing" and it's a sign that you're in a top quality pub. For lacing to occur, every part of the process needs to be perfect, from the brew at the start of the process, to the conditioning when it gets to us, to having a "beer-clean" glass and finally the pour itself.

Lacing forms when hydrophobic (water-repelling) proteins from malted barley and hop compounds bind to carbon dioxide bubbles and stick to the glass, leaving behind a trail of foam. If the glass contains microscopic residues of grease, lipstick, or soap, the foam cannot adhere to the sides and will slide right back into the liquid.

We don't settle for anything less than perfection here. Come to a pub that does things right 🍻

We've done plenty of history posts recently from the bridge out front to the lamps out back in the beer garden and everything in between. And I know what you're thinking... what about a post on the urinals? Well you're in luck!

The urinals in the gents have such a historic significance and cult following that I found a guy on the internet selling digital copies of a photo of our urinals for £24... and here I am giving one away for free! You're welcome Huddersfield 😉

Our urinals are from J. Duckett and Sons of Burnley, and what makes them interesting is that they are quite a rare example of traditionally kiln fired and salt glazed pipes. The introduction of cheaper plastic drains and pipes eventually led to the demise of this great company, but we are proud to still have them here at The Sportsman!

With it being the start of the FIFA World Cup today, we thought it'd be a good excuse to showcase a stunning bourbon from one of the host countries for this weeks Dram Club! Here we have Bluegrass Straight Rye Whiskey 😍

A robust straight rye whiskey from Kentucky's Bluegrass Distillers, made with a mash bill of 95% rye, and 5% malted barley, aged at least five years, and bottled without chill filtration at a hearty 55% ABV. Plenty of character and depth with this one! 👌
