Steve Barker aka DJ Old Rat

Steve Barker, also known as DJ Old Rat (DJ Lao Lao Shu), is a legendary British music journalist, broadcaster and DJ. He is best known as the creator and host of On the Wire, the UK's longest-running continuous alternative and underground music radio show. Also he writes the monthly dub/reggae column for The Wire magazine.

After a promising start in journalism, interviewing Jimi Hendrix and Yoko Ono in the same week, his ambitions receded only to be recruited to Radio Blackburn in 1978 to work on the music review show RPM. In 1980 RPM begat Spinoff which in 1984 mutated into On the Wire, now the longest running continuous underground music show on UK radio - and Steve recently celebrated his 40th continuous year with BBC Radio Lancashire.

On the Wire was an early champion of new musical genres such as hip hop, House and Techno, many bands and performers who were to become musical legends passed through the show including U2, REM, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Eno, Joy Division, Burning Spear and Lee “Scratch” Perry. Of late On the Wire has taken a more relaxed view of the music scene and is as likely to play pre-war hillbilly, gospel or country blues as much as experimental electronica or dub.

DJ Old Rat will be joined by Red Kite (The Lift Global Music Club) and Howell (VG++)

This Saturday - 5th September

Town Hall Sessions present: Godsticks + KNIM

Formed in Wales, Godsticks have built a reputation as one of the UK’s most inventive and powerful progressive rock/metal acts, blending crushing riffs, atmospheric textures and intricate musicianship with memorable songwriting. Fronted by guitarist and vocalist Darran Charles, the band have toured internationally and shared stages with artists including The Aristocrats and Devin Townsend.

Their acclaimed new album VOiD sees the band pushing into darker and heavier territory while retaining the melodic and technical edge they’re known for. Metal Talk described the band as “fresh, focused and firing” on the new release, while Sonic Perspectives called lead single “M.I.A.” “one of Godsticks’ most engaging and abrasive tracks in quite some time.”

Expect a set packed with precision musicianship, huge dynamics and modern progressive metal at its most intense and cinematic.

Godsticks will be supported by Leeds based prog metal band Knim. 2 great prog bands for the price of one. Don’t miss it

Thursday : Grey Lantern present: MAQUINA. + Warm Parts

Kicking off the first Boreal Collective season, Grey Lantern bring Portugals' MAQUINA. to Glossop, with support from Warm Parts.

MAQUINA. are a Lisbon-based trio and one of the most active Portuguese bands on the European circuit. The current lineup features Halison Peres (drums and vocals), João Cavalheiro (guitar) and José Rego (bass). Their music is built around repetition and minimalism, where krautrock and industrial electronics intertwine, often layered with noise and experimental textures. The combination generates a positive, restless energy that is intensely compelling and impossible not to move to. Their sound is simultaneously mechanical and organic, hypnotic yet full of drive, designed to capture the listener and make every rhythmic impulse felt.

Next Thursday, 3rd September, Grey Lantern kick off the first season of Boreal Collective events at The Globe with Portuguese experimental krautrock trailblazers Maquina!

---

MAQUINA. are a Lisbon-based trio and one of the most active Portuguese bands on the European circuit. The current lineup features Halison Peres (drums and vocals), João Cavalheiro (guitar) and José Rego (bass). Over the past few years, the trio has solidified a singular sonic identity capable of drawing in diverse audiences and crossing both geographical and stylistic boundaries.

MAQUINA.’s music is built around repetition and minimalism, where krautrock and industrial electronics intertwine, often layered with noise and experimental textures. The combination generates a positive, restless energy that is intensely compelling and impossible not to move to. Their sound is simultaneously mechanical and organic, hypnotic yet full of drive, designed to capture the listener and make every rhythmic impulse felt.

Live, MAQUINA. are renowned for their physical intensity and strong instrumental focus. Hypnotic repetition, insistent rhythmic patterns and dense textures combine to create fully immersive experiences — shows where dancing becomes almost inevitable. Their performances cross generations and musical tastes, bringing together fans of rock, electronics, techno and experimental music in venues that sell out almost immediately, both in Portugal and abroad.
