AN INVITATION from Beth:

“We know how much The Champ meant to so many people, and how many friendships, memories, and traditions were created within its walls under Lawrence’s care. He was immensely proud of the staff, the regulars, and everyone who walked through the door over the years.

On 19th April 2026, I’d love to invite anyone who would like to run, or walk with me, at the Champion of the Thames / Dixon Half Marathon.

We will be starting and finishing on Midsummer Common https://w3w.co/studio.pint.valid running three loops across the Common and along the River Cam.

We will be updating across our social media channels, links and the website shortly.

In the meantime, THANK YOU for your support and donations so far, and for joining us or donating on the day!

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Lawrence Dixon passed away peacefully last night.

For over 25 years, Lawrence was the heart and soul of The Champion of the Thames. To many he was more than a landlord, he was a friend, a storyteller, a familiar face behind the bar, and the person who made The Champ feel like home. The pub was never just a business to him; it was a community built on conversation, laughter, real ale, and genuine connection.

We know how much The Champ meant to so many people, and how many friendships, memories, and traditions were created within its walls under Lawrence’s care. He was immensely proud of the staff, the regulars, and everyone who walked through the door over the years.

As a family, we kindly ask for privacy at this time as we come to terms with our loss.

Sadly, this also means that The Champion of the Thames will not reopen under the Dixon family name, and The Champ as we know it will close its doors as of today.

This is not a decision taken lightly, but one that reflects the end of an era that was so closely tied to Lawrence himself.

We would like to thank every member of staff, every loyal regular, every visitor, and every friend who helped make The Champ what it became over the past quarter century. You were all part of Lawrence’s extended family, and your support meant the world to him.

Lawrence is now at peace, and we take comfort in knowing how loved and respected he was by this community.

Raise a glass for him tonight.

With love and gratitude,
Beth Dixon

A message from Lawrence’s daughter

Beth's story

“For those who don't know, my father, Lawrence Dixon, has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. Anyone who knows Lawrence will know just how caring and exceptional he is, and how proud I am to call him my dad.
The last few weeks have been incredibly tough, but the amount of love and support we've received has been overwhelming. The stories I've heard have made me laugh, cry, and realise even more just how special he is. Dad is my best friend and has supported me through so many good and bad times.

I was originally due to run the Cambridge Half Marathon, but with everything going on, l realised it wasn't a realistic goal. Running has always been an outlet for me and has really helped my mental health, and the people I've met through running have supported me more than they probably realise.
I wanted Dad to be there to watch me run, so l had an idea: to organise our own half marathon for when he's out of hospital.

On 19th April, I'd love to invite anyone who would like to run or support me at the Champion of the Thames Half Marathon. We'll start and finish at the pub, with the hope that Dad will be there to see both the start and the finish. For anyone who would like to take part and run with me then please message me directly and I'II start organising. This won't be about running fast, it will be about running together. If you can donate today it will be appreciated and for those that can't please show your support on the day.”

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving, once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity.

Something VERY special has landed at The Champ.

It happens but once a year, and it’s always followed by at least 3 wise men, sometimes more…

Any guesses?
