Cambridge Wine Merchants Established in 1993 we are one of the biggest independent wine merchants in the country.
(563)

We have3 shops (with wine bars) in Cambridge as well as franchises and partner businesses alongside a successful door-to-door and wholesale operations nationwide. Cambridge Wine Merchants was established in 1993 by two friends, Hal Wilson and Brett Turner, who met at Peterhouse May Ball in Cambridge (UK) in 1990. Sharing a love of wine, they wanted to work in the wine trade but didn't fancy workin

g for somebody else, and so CWM was born.

“We started with one shop in Mill Rd, Cambridge, and have never looked back”. Still owned by Hal and Brett, we’re now one of the biggest independent wine merchants in the country and we are continuing to expand. We have three shops (with two wine bars) in Cambridge at Bridge Street, King's Parade, and Cherry Hinton Rd, as well as franchises in Ampthill and Royston (Herts), plus successful door-to-door and wholesale operations nationwide. We have won many awards including International Wine Challenge (the world’s biggest wine competition) top prize: “Merchant of the Year”, Decanter Magazine's 'Best National Wine Shop', and we’ve been voted the UK’s No. 1 Independent Drinks Retailer numerous times. Our team consists of a varied and hugely talented group of individuals covering many nationalities, ages and backgrounds. Many are ex-Oddbins, Thresher or Majestic, all are passionate about what we do and pretty amazing at what they do. Our mission is simply to be the best independent wine merchant in the country, and to have fun doing it!

Bank Holiday weekend is here, and with the warmer weather, it feels like the perfect time for something refreshing.

This Bank Holiday, our Cherry Hinton Road and Bridge Street bars will be serving a special cocktail: the Sake Spritz.

Made with Akashi-Tai Umeshu plum sake, dry sparkling wine and soda water, it’s light and refreshing, with gentle sweetness and a clean finish. Akashi-Tai is known for its small-batch, carefully balanced styles and offers a great introduction to sake.

Alongside the cocktail, our Cherry Hinton Road branch will also be hosting a barrel-top tasting of the Akashi-Tai range throughout the Bank Holiday for anyone keen to explore more.

🥂With the Bank Holiday weekend bringing the promise of warmer weather, we’ve selected a few bottles that are perfect for enjoying in the sunshine.

Whether you’re firing up the BBQ, packing up for a picnic, or simply unwinding with a glass in the garden, these are wines made for easy drinking, relaxed afternoons, and sharing with friends.

Flint Vineyard Charmat Rosé £22.99
Fresh, delicate and wonderfully vibrant! This English sparkling rosé is packed with wild strawberry, raspberry and floral notes, balanced by bright acidity and a fine mousse. Ideal for picnics and sunny afternoons.

Lupa Blanc del Santo £29.99
With it being International Chardonnay Day, we had to include this in the mix. A beautifully expressive Chardonnay from Argentina that’s fresh yet textured with notes of citrus, orchard fruit and gentle creaminess. A fantastic food wine for grilled fish, chicken or lighter BBQ dishes.

Vignoble Thomas & Chansault ‘Mescla’ Rouge £22.99
Juicy, soft and packed with red berry fruit, this easy-drinking southern French blouge is perfect served slightly chilled on warmer evenings. A great choice for charcuterie, grilled meats or relaxed outdoor drinking with friends.

Kopke Lágrima White Port £21.00
White Port is one of our favourite warm-weather drinks and a brilliant alternative to the usual aperitif. Lightly chilled, it shows notes of citrus, stone fruit and honeyed nuts, but really comes into its own served long with tonic, plenty of ice and a slice of orange for an easy summer cocktail.

His invitation to join the WSTA board in 2025 reflects his longstanding contribution to the independent wine trade.

We’re incredibly proud to see his impact recognised among so many influential names across the drinks industry.

Here’s to continuing to champion great people in the wine industry.

Looking to explore something a little different? We also stock a selected range of sake, including Akashi-Tai, a producer that offers a very different perspective on the category.

Brewed in small batches by the Toji-led Akashi Sake Brewery in Hyōgo Prefecture, one of Japan’s most respected sake regions, the range is rooted in traditional brewing, but with a real sense of precision and balance throughout.

The styles vary from delicately aromatic and refined to more savoury and textured, but what ties them together is clarity, purity and an ease at the table that makes them incredibly rewarding with food.

For anyone curious about sake beyond the familiar stereotypes, Akashi-Tai is always an interesting place to start.

You’ll currently find a selection from the range available both online and across our branches.
