🎉 Last Year’s Al Hodge Music Award Winner: Flo Jubb 🎷
We’re thrilled to catch up with Flo Jubb, our very deserving 2024 Al Hodge Music Award winner!
At last year’s awards, Flo was named CMST’s Pupil of the Year and received her certificate and trophy from Gareth Churcher. She then wowed the audience with a beautiful saxophone performance of Dreams of You by Dave McGarry, accompanied by Gareth. To finish the night, Luke Hodge presented her with the Al Hodge Award (which comes with £750), recognising her outstanding musicianship, dedication, and passion for music in Cornwall.
Since then, Flo has been incredibly busy! She continues to perform with Cornwall Wind Orchestra, Carrick Winds, Cornwall Youth Jazz Orchestra, Sax Is Our Business, Tros Meor, and the Falmouth School Jazz Band.
Standout highlights this year include:
• Performing a solo set at the Falmouth Christmas Tree Festival switch-on
• Winning the Grade 7/8 Woodwind Class at the Camborne Music Festival
• Receiving a grant from the Cornwall Young and Talented Fund and performing at their celebration event
Thanks to combined support from the Al Hodge Student Award and the Cornwall Young and Talented Fund, Flo was able to buy a beautiful second-hand Yanagisawa alto saxophone, which she’s absolutely delighted with.
This July, Flo will be heading to Birmingham’s Symphony Hall with the Cornish county ensembles for the Music for Youth Festival, taking both her new alto and her tenor sax along.
Next year she starts at Truro College, where she plans to continue her lessons and join the college Jazz Band.
We’re so proud of Flo’s continued growth and can’t wait to follow her musical journey. The Al Hodge Award is all about supporting talented young musicians like Flo, and it’s wonderful to see the real impact it’s making.
The presentation for the new CMST Pupil of the Year will be held on Wednesday 8th July at St Martin’s Church, Liskeard.
We look forward to celebrating the next talented winner!
Congratulations again, Flo! Keep shining 🎉
