Today I found myself in the beautiful city of Bologna, sitting down to a plate of tortellini and ragù, one of Italy’s most treasured culinary traditions.

As I tasted each bite, I couldn’t help but think of India.

At first glance, Indian and Italian food seem worlds apart. Yet both cultures tell stories through recipes handed down from grandparents, fiercely protect regional traditions, and believe that food is far more than something to eat—it’s identity, memory, and belonging.

The tortellini of Bologna reminds me of the dumplings, breads, and family recipes of India. Different spices, different ingredients, but the same love, pride, and respect for heritage.

Travel always inspires me. Every journey teaches me something new about hospitality, simplicity, and the power of authentic food. These lessons quietly find their way back to my kitchen at A Se Anar.

Because whether it’s a tortellini in Bologna or a momo in Darjeeling, every great dish begins with the same ingredient: a story worth telling.

And today’s comfort meal? Beans on toast.

But not the kind from a tin and a hurry.These were slow-sautéed masala beans with smoky paprika onions, fresh coriander and a whisper of mild garam masala on warm buttered toast.

Because good food isn’t always about luxury.Sometimes it’s about memory, warmth and making humble ingredients feel special.

The finest meals often begin with the simplest things. 🫘🍞

We are closed this week for some much needed kitchen upgrade. Of course we will spend the time wisely by putting our feet up. I’m just hoping we get that much talked about ‘heat wave’ 🙄.
