They create jobs, bring people together, support local suppliers, sponsor local teams, and provide a place for people to connect.
But right now, pubs and the wider hospitality industry are facing enormous pressure from rising costs, increasing taxes, higher utility bills and ongoing economic challenges.
Despite this, hospitality businesses in the UK continue to pay a 20% VAT rate — one of the highest in Europe.
Many European countries recognise the value of hospitality and apply reduced VAT rates to support the sector, helping businesses invest in their teams, premises and communities.
That’s why we’re supporting the VAT’s The Problem campaign, which is calling for a fairer 10% VAT rate for hospitality businesses across the UK.
A reduced VAT rate would help protect jobs, support independent businesses, encourage investment, and ensure local pubs like ours can continue to thrive for years to come.

On top of this, UK hospitality pays 20% VAT – one of the highest rates in Europe.
France, Spain and Italy all have a 10% VAT rate for hospitality, while Germany's is just 7%. This imbalance is putting enormous pressure on pubs, restaurants and venues across the country.
