Maleza—the Spanish word for “weeds”—reclaims what is too often dismissed as unwanted, unruly, or out of place. Yet weeds are among the most resilient forms of life. They take root in fractured ground, adapt to changing conditions, and return despite every attempt at erasure. Their persistence reminds us that survival is not merely endurance—it is transformation.

Bringing together the work of female BIPOC artists across diverse media, Maleza unfolds as a living ecosystem of stories r of these works emerge from histories marked by colonialism, displacement, gender inequality, and imposed identities. Yet they refuse to remain defined by these conditions. Instead, they affirm the enduring strength of women as cultural guardians, storytellers, caregivers, and agents of transformation. They speak to struggles for dignity, justice, and self-determination that cannot exist in isolation, but are sustained through solidarity across communities and generations.

Like maleza, these artists grow where they were never expected to thrive. Their practices insist that what has been overlooked, marginalized, or uprooted continues to take root elsewhere. In every crack, every stitch, every gesture of care, there is the possibility of renewal. Maleza invites us to see resilience not as an exceptional act, but as a collective practice—one that reminds us that our deepest roots are nourished by memory, reciprocity, and our profound interconnectedness with one another and the living world.

Please join me this Friday July 31st at 6 pm at Bar Bacan, for the opening reception of "Whimsical Continued.. ".

This exhibit is a continuation of my ongoing series of photo-based, mixed-media collages that alludes to the unpremeditated nature of collage-making and explores -in part- the pure and spontaneous essence of childhood .
Drawing inspiration from old photographs and by harmonically and playfully integrating various materials and techniques, I intend to create worlds that could be contemplated as the inner imagination of the subject in each composition.

“Refugio”/“Shelter” (2025) is a portrait/representation of those ancestors whose memory evokes a certain sense of safety and whose absence has somehow imprinted in us a sense of belonging in the world. Through the memory of them we travel to a place that feels like home, where landscapes, language, scents and faces are familiar.
