The Attwoods Glenlyon Estate 2022 Pinot Noir was one of the standouts at our recent Attwoods tasting. Troy and Jane Walsh make it from cool-climate Glenlyon fruit in the Macedon Ranges, using 40% whole bunch fermentation and one-third new oak: aromatic on the nose, fine and elegant through the mid-palate, with a clean acid finish.

That Friday feeling: dim lights, a low hum of conversation, the rhythm of ice against steel.

The bar’s alive, the cocktails are flowing, and the weekend’s just about to hit its stride.

A Negroni in winter makes a particular kind of sense. Gin, Campari and sweet vermouth in equal parts, the flavour hits the same way the colour does: deep, direct, not interested in being subtle. On the cocktail menu at Woodend Cellar & Bar, open seven days.

Slow cooked pork belly finds a good match in watermelon jam. The sweetness works against the richness of the belly in a way that makes sense the moment you taste it, and the fresh chilli, mint and parsley keep the plate bright. It's part of the tapas menu at Woodend Cellar & Bar, open seven days.

New release. Williams Crossing 2024 Pinot Noir from Curly Flat is a cool-climate Macedon Ranges Pinot built on fresh red berries, cherry, and cedar spice. French oak maturation and whole bunch fermentation add the earthy, herbal complexity that defines the style. In the bottle shop now.

"Me Apunto"

Campari, Elderflower Liquor, Tequila, Lime juice, Bitters.

The name of the cocktail roughly translates to “I’m down/count me in”, which is the kinda mantra we hope anyone heading to the bar can adopt.

The cocktail list gets the same treatment as the wine list.

Where we can pour local, we do: gin and vodka, local liqueurs, and Macedon Ranges sparkling, where the recipe calls for it. Some things still come from abroad (Kentucky bourbon isn't exactly in production outside the US), and that's fine.

But the philosophy behind the bar is the same as the one behind the cellar: support the region and stock what's genuinely good.

Merth Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024 is now on the shelves at Woodend Cellar & Bar, and there's very little of it.

The fruit comes from 50-year-old vines on the historic Zig Zag Road vineyard, one of the oldest sites in the Macedon Ranges. It's a single-barrel, minimal-intervention release, and significant losses in the Harcourt fires have made this vintage exceptionally limited. If you've been meaning to try Merth Vineyard, this is the one to get behind.

Sausage of the day is a new addition to the tapas menu at Woodend Cellar & Bar.

Sliced and served on fermented cabbage with a tomato and jalapeño relish on the side: straightforward, well-seasoned bar food that changes with what's available locally. The kind of dish that pairs as well with a glass of Pinot as it does with a cold beer.
