Afghanistan, Iraq & Middle East Area of Operations Commemoration Service 2026

The Cronulla RSL Sub-Branch was honoured to be represented by our Senior Vice President, Ross Edwards, and General Committee member, James Moody, at the Engadine RSL Sub-Branch’s Third Annual Afghanistan, Iraq & Middle East Area of Operations Commemoration Service held on Friday 23rd October 2026.

This year’s service holds special significance as we mark the 25th anniversary of Australian service in Afghanistan and honour the more than 46,000 Australians who served across Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East Area of Operations between 2001 and 2021.

We pause to remember all who served, acknowledge the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families, and pay tribute to those who continue to live with the lasting impacts of their service.

We thank the Engadine RSL Sub-Branch for hosting this important commemorative service and for ensuring the service and sacrifice of our veterans are never forgotten.

Today is National War Widows Day, when we recognise the sacrifices of Australia’s war widows, carers and families impacted by military service.

National War Widows Day raises awareness of the support available to war widows and widowers in Australia.

It’s also a reminder of the profound loss experienced by those whose loved ones have died in service to their country.

Formal Guards are an important military tradition that showcase the professionalism, discipline and pride of a unit. They are conducted to honour significant occasions, recognise distinguished visitors, commemorate important events, and demonstrate the high standards expected of soldiers. Beyond ceremonial duties, Formal Guards reinforce teamwork, attention to detail and military bearing. Every movement, command and action reflects the discipline and commitment that soldiers apply in all aspects of service. These parades also provide an opportunity to connect with the community and preserve the customs and traditions that have been passed down through generations of service.

A Formal Guard is more than a ceremony. It is a visible demonstration of the values, professionalism and esprit de corps that defines our unit and if the author asked the soldiers they would say “for 6 RAR this signifies Wednesday and we are half way through the working week”.
